Hey,

Does anyone know if an Oxford college is particularly reknowned for maths??

Oxford doesn't have a reputation anywhere close to Cambridge when it comes to mathematics. Therefore, while you have Trinity in cambridge, I don't know of a college of a similar reputation in oxford!
However, Oxford has a v.good course ' thatz wha i think at least' in maths n phil . There are few colleges that take a decent number of applicant, as it's one of the smaller courses in Oxford. But, I think Balliol has probably the best suited staff for that course in the uni. When I was considering that course, A Phil-logician 'tutor' in balliol told me it would be crazy to consider doing the course elsewhere in oxford...

During the interview the impression i was given was that st. johns is the place to be for maths, tho st. annes (where i unsuccesfully applied) was reportedly also very strong.

I got the impression somewhere St. Hugh's was good for maths, but maybe it's just that they take a lot of maths students.

St Hughes is a large college so it wouldn't be surprising. They had 15 places for all the maths and joint maths courses. 40 people went for it so i'm not surprised i didn't get in at st. Hughes

st. johns is best for maths only because it is right next to the maths institute!! that means that if i go i get that extra 10-15 minutes lie in!! yeah!! lol, seriously though didnt realise st. johns was supposed to be the best?.. i only applied coz it seemed like a nice place.. lucky me!

LoL they won't turn you down on the basis of your 93% average mark!
Their decision will lie more in your attainment of the maths exam you take at your interview and the interview itself.

Yes, i kinda guessed that. But i didnt know if the standard for oxford was that generally everyone applying had 100% in there a-level modules. Someone who has a 81% average is clearly going to struggle a lot more. i just wanted to know what most successful applicants were averaging in there a-level modules.

when i went to interview they did ask me for my individual module marks, however i had a 95% average at the time and they seemed fine at the time. I think that they place quite a high emphasis on the test that you do when you go there. for guidance...

i felt that i got 60 something percent on the test (although that is just my guess, i have no results from it..) and that was enough. ive heard all sorts of statistics such as a 40% average on the test and 90% of candidates getting less than 50%... so that is a very rough guide to what your aiming at on the test. (of course i dont know if i only just scraped in, or was easily in. or for that matter if i did in fact get 60 something percent...)

my offer is AAA with 2 of those having to be maths and further maths.

hope that helps!

That's quite useful actually! even if it isnt 100% correct. I know cambridge ask for individual marks on all modules...just hadnt heard anything about oxford. I just didnt know if a 93% average was high enough to consider myself as having a decent chance...

i dont think a 93% average is going to hinder you in any way... that is a reasonably impressive average! however they look more at potential compared to achievement. That is the feeling i got when i went for interview. as long as you can convince them that you are willing to put in alot of work i dont think they care TOO much about things such as GCSES. (although i think a good set of AS levels and predicted A levels are probably necessary.)

Yeah, its ok - could be better

Well, i am teaching AS f.maths myself (on an average of about 87% - but this is because the school dont teach a subject for a single student which is fair enough) for that...but i hope they see that it shows commitment to the subject.

I will be going in on A2 grades and not predicted grades...

If your college didn't offer it they won;t mark you down in their rankings.
Remember they are looking for potential, not money or anything so their basis for decision will be purely on your maths potential.

Some people are brilliant at GCSE and A-level but that's because they are levels where they tell you techniques and you follow them - something tells me at university (and oxford in particular) maths is a lot more based on intuition and ability to tackle unfamiliar problems using what you already know and that extra flash of genius.

What exam board are you self-teaching yourself for? What modules? And will you take an exam, or are just doing it for the knowledge?

I'm doing AQA maths.

A-level is: Me1,M1,P1,P2,S1,P3
AS-level is: M2,P4,D1.

I will by june have taken the 9 exams. i am also going to teach myself (but not taking the exams) in P5,P6,M3 over the summer hols. Although i just bought 2 maths book and am going to work from then to learn new ideas... i think they cover p5+6 and m3-6.

Merton's students seem to be quite good at Maths:

I think that the entrance test has alot of bearing on the decisions. I didnt have overly impressive GCSE's and also did badly in my interviews. However, I do think that I did reasonably well on the test, and that made the difference.

Also, there isnt any one college which is particularly good for Maths. Though there are always colleges like st johns and merton which seem to attract some of the brightest.
