The Student Room Group

Thats a tough one. Im a Civil Engineer and was at one point torn between the two.

I chose Cardiff because it has a city centre location, the city isnt that rough and it is a capital city so it is quick to get the first shops of upcoming international chains. It also has a major sporting venue. Chance to learn a new language???

Loughborough is sporty, nice campus, easy access to most parts of the country and doesnt instantly get this sheep thing that most 6th formers give it.

Cardiff - we rock!

There's over 100 societies and clubs, great nightlife, the uni is less than 10mins from the city centre, well respected Russell Group member, just generally a lovely place to live!

And a fantastic city in terms of sport, shopping, etc. And one of the best Student Unions in the country

What does being in the Russell Group mean to an A-Level student?

I don't see the point in saying that.

Just wondered if anyone knew off hand, but thanks for your extremely useful input to this thread.

Well I'd heard of the Russell Group before I came here, it gets mentioned a fair bit on the news when top-up fees and such get debated. For those that don't know, it's a group of 19 research-led "old" universities. They are generally well respected by employers and if you're interested in going to a university with a solid research basis then it's also good.

However (sorry to confuse you more Shuvle  ) Loughborough regularly beats most of the Russells in university tables.

Its a tough un for you.

Have you got any offers from them (Lou and Cdf) yet?

Does it? Since when? Do you actually have any proof of this?

Cardiff still beats Loughborough though

Get yourself down to Cardiff. Loughborough would be sooo boring!

I recieved an offer from lufbra needing 260 points to get on the course, and I have an interview for cardiffs foundation course (need 240 points). This means doing an extra year ontop of the 4 or 5 year sandwich course. Would this affect your decision? Bascically I can get on either course easy, however I dont have the correct subjects for cardiffs arch eng course which seems to be more technical rather than lufbras more creative course.
Im from Nottingham, and can safely say that if you are after a decent social life, then go to Cardiff. Loughborough is a really small town, with a few bars and pubs, i'm not even sure if there is a club there. Theres easy access to Nottingham with buses and trains, but not sure how late these run into the night. Very pretty place, a good university, and nice for a visit, but would say the social side of things let it down completely.

As a place, Cardiff is significantly more awesome. Off the uni campus, Loughborough is a chav infested wasteland. It has a mighty total of 3 small clubs, I've only been into two of them and they were complete crap. Both of the students unions are good, but Loughborough's sometimes has quite a few non-chav locals sneaking in there (eg, me). Also, in Loughborough chavs will start a fight with you if they think you're a student, I haven't had that in Cardiff yet.
I have to say I went to a the loughborough business visit day today and it definitley isnt for me, i need a city!

loughborough or cardiff for architectural engineering? Also for the social side of it? Views?
stay away from Loughborough...
it's for business and essay-type people...

O.o I never heard of the 'Russel group' before.. But My Unis part of it. Loughbrough has a hell of a sports reputation with the best Uni teams so If your a sporty type person then it may interest you, But then again I hear nothing but good things about cardiff
