It's only about drinking if you want it to be. Everyone probably will go to a pub/club, but you can go and not drink.

My Freshers' Week was pretty much all about drinking...

...but don't worry, not everyone is the same. There will be plenty of people who don't drink, or not much anyway. Also, please don't put unnecessary emphasis on Freshers' Week. It's not everything. It's quite scary because you don't know anyone, and a lot of people drink to make themselves more fun/confident. After a few weeks when you get to know people, everything will calm down and you will find your niche. You might well find people who get wasted in Freshers' Weeks and then remain sober until Christmas.

Freshers Week is about meeting people and getting to know the place. Drinking is just a by-product of the socialising.

That's what I was going to say. Although I am only 15 so haven't got a clue, but when my cousin had his he met loads of new people, and had quite a few drinks. But not all people will feel the need to drink.

Yeap, Its not all a out drinking, The uni put on events for socialising and meeting new people. Alot of people percieve it about getting drunk every night.. but its down to what you want it to be.

But there is a lot of drinking involved right?...... RIGHT?!

Reply 7

Obviously! I am looking forward to freshers week so much. Not because of the drinking but because of the fun element!

Reply 8

I don't drink but I'm figuring there'll still be things for me to do. I can always go to clubs and pubs and have a good time, no one's going to forcefeed me alcohol...

If you want it. Hell Yeah.

blah reallistically, whether right or wrong, just go and get drunk..because they probably just feel they have to in order to make an 'impression' to those around them

sad indeed but that is the way it is

no one will force you to drink. you do what you want. there is an opportunity for people to drink as much as they want but no one will tie you down and force feed it to you. unless you join one of those special clubs....

i used to be tee total so i can testify that you can have fun without drinking at freshers. now i drink but not excessively and if you hang round with people with a grain of common sense, they won't care that you're not drinking.

Reply 12

No one will force you and I guess you wont be ostracised for not but, well . . . enough said.

There was a lot of drinking at mine, but I think that was completely down to choice and I've now realised that there are quite a few tee-totallers who I didn't know about. But the whole thing wasn't about the drinking it was about getting to know new people and making friends and easing people into university life (and not doing work for a week) .

Reply 14

You dont have to, i didnt, but then im sad and didnt do anything

not to sound marxist, but there's very much a false consciousness in freshers' week. people have the idea that it's going to be "the best week of their lives"; thus, those who don't quite follow the same path of the majority will then fear that their lack of involvement will mean that it's not going to be the "best week of their lives". for me it wasn't, but it doesn't mean that i didn't have fun. just see it for what it is, do what you feel like and see what happens.

Basically what the title says- is there anything to do for people who dont/cant drink?

i barely drank in fresher's week - a couple of glasses of wine a night ish, one night i didn't drink at all, still had an amazing time. i went out with everyone who did drink, i just felt better the next morning! I danced hard at hte freshers ball, chatted to lots of people... it was great! having declared passionately how i didn't need to dirnk to have a good time this then deteriorated through term...and i spent the last fortnight absolutely wasted, which i regret because i felt really rough the next day and did stupid things!

So no, it's not, and in fact i'd argue it's BETTER without drinking

Depends on the uni and what you want to do.

In most cases yes it very much can be all about drinking and meeting people. But I didn't drink any alcohol at all the whole week so its not like a requirement

I hated freshers week - it was so dull for someone like me. I also hated it this year (although i wasn't a fresher; so it wasn't my freshers week).

I'm teetotal and had fun during Freshers Week. Didn't go on any pubcrawls, but went to pretty much everything else and had a good time. It depends on how you act in such situations imo.
