Burnt my hand...

Hi, I'm not really asking for medical advice, I just want to know what you all think.
On Friday evening i accidentaly burnt my hand on one of the trays in the oven. At first it was a white mark on the top of my hand, I was advised to run it under cold water for a while. It then blistered up and stayed like that for about a day, before it popped, which was nice.
Since then it hasn't healed at all and remained rather shiny and sticky. It also really hurts. I've put savlon on it and thus is hurts even more. Being Monday now, and it showing no signs of healing and is even more painful then Friday, should I be worried?

I had this kind of thing happen to me the other week, i was in a chemistry lesson and i wasn't thinking, i was only supposed toheat acid to 70 celcius i started boiling it so i just grabbed the beaker from on top of the bunsen and the acid spat all over my hand, also where the flame had been it had caught he top rim of the beaker....where i grabbed, so i did this 2 weeks ago and it has only jsut really gone down. i didn't feel the burn because i have aspestos fingers, althoutgh i felt the acid burn as it was onteh back of my hand na dthat has just gone down, i wouldn't worry too much about it not going down peoples heal at different rates, if you are concenred go see a doctor about it they may be able to offer guidance.

I think the shiny and sticky skin is just new skin which needs to form new layers and thicken up before it looks like normal. Don't quote me on that though - ask a medic :p:

no, you shouldn't be worried - i did that last year. the shiny/sticky skin will go in a couple of weeks - just put a plaster on it (large so it doesn't actually stick to the affected area) and that's about it. i didn't really find it very painful, but if it's that bad then just take some paracetemol. hope that this helps.

I burnt myself quite badly last year. It does take a while to heal. I used some special burn stuff. It was like a clear gel and it really helped with the pain. It comes in sachets. Hope that is of some help.

In a couple days it'll kind of scab over, but it'll be a skin coloured scab and feel scaley, rather than a scab made of dried blood.

Most appealing quote of the week award!

DON'T put a plaster on it. Leave it for the air to get to it and heal it.
Trust me, I burn myself a lot.

:/ but my friend tod me that and thus I did the washing up without gloves on and it hurts worse than ever...

Well, it's Poica

But yeah, it's not much to worry about - I burned my finger last year while I was cooking; didn't have oven gloves, so was using a towel to take something out of the oven...only thing was that the towel wasn't completely covering my hand (though I obviously didn't know this), and my finger went straight on to the metal rack.
Once the blister's gone, you've just got to wait for the new skin to toughen up - as pratikv said, it takes a while.

It's probably infected, it's happened to me before. Don't take this as gospel, as it was ages ago, but i'm sure the doctor told me that you shouldn't apply creams such as savlon once the blister has burst. Better head to the doctor for something better. Hope it heals soon.

just wash it thoroughly once and put a plaster on it so it doesn't get infected. plus, if the skin wasn't broken, only burnt, then i don't think it's an infection.

Hey! That's mean! I'm not a sadist, I'm a massochist!!

And I burn myself because I worked in kitchens - difficult not to burn yourself from time to time!

Try not to put it in hot water or near anything very hot or it will hurt more. I hate getting burnt, but don't put a plaster on it unless it's got to the scaley stage.

That's different from letting it "breathe!" Because it was a burn, all the nerve endings in that area are now hypersensitive, and so what previously would feel like nice warm water will now feel horribly hot. I'd wear gloves next time, getting it soaking wet and full of washing up grime won't help.

To me it sounds like a perfectly normal burn healing. I wouldn't worry. As for the conflicting advice on plasters, my general advice is to leave them off if you can, BUT if it's an area that's likely to get knocked a lot, or you're doing something that involves getting dirty, then cover it over for that. No need to see a doctor, I don't think.

Fair enough...I'm not one to judge

Aren't you meant to wear gloves to do that anyway?

I did, which is even more confusing!

In which case it may just be the burn drying out. Or something very strange happened...

That's how burns heal. The flesh on top of the wound has to heal which takes ages. About 2 weeks.
