Just find out from other people about what interests you both share and start up a conversation. Or...in my case, shout out the name of a band you know you both like and hope they respond without awkward looks. . .

I think this will actually involve you having a conversation with them. Just take any opportunity you get to have a chat, and things will progress. Obviously you can't just march up with some really deep topic like "You! Religion. Discuss." but once people realise that you're alright to talk to then they are more likely to take the time to do so.

So that's the mistake I've been making all these years..

Right, I really want to get to know other people in my year better but havent really spoken to them much so might seem a bit weird to go up and start a conversation with them. Any ideas on how to go about this?

you could try asking people for help in a lesson, such as sit next to someone different for a change, and say you don't understand something the teacher has just said and ask if they can explain it to you - simple as that!

*hears copious quantities of laughter at the stupidity of the idea*

well, it's an idea anyway!
