quitting smoking

hiya just wondered if anyone out there has any hints or tips on quitting smoking. i have a highly addictive personality and began smoking at the age of 13ish. i am now 17 and happily smoke 35-40 a day and am eager to quite smoking as i realise what a prat i am. if anyone out there doesnt smoke and reads this dont start, its not big and it is really not clever. its the dumbest thing to do. there are alot of things i would change about myself which make me self concious (weight, hight, general appearance, stretch marks under arm pits e.t.c) but if i could change one thing i would never ever have smoked. so i was just wondering if anyone had any ideas or experiences on helping someone to quit. i have tried patches e.t.c but they just make me nausious (sp?)
any help would be greatly appreciated

There is a tablet out now cant remember what its called but it has successfully helped a few ppl i know quit. The tablet has known side effects but nothin serious. you take it for approx 8 weeks. anyway u can only get it from a doctor so go an c yours.
I quit 18 months ago with patches and chewing gum. If you really wanna do it you will.
I have t admit though when i get drunk i end up smokin but at least i dont get up in the mornin an light a smoke b4 anythin like i used to.
Most primary care trusts have smokin cessasion nurses whom can support you whilst and after you quit too.
All the best x

if patches etc don't work, you could always do it the old fashioned way......will power! i quit, but realised after a year that i wasn't addicted in th first place, and just enjoyed the taste, so went back to it. i can quit any any point if i want, but i like it and don't see the need. although, when i thought that i needed help i printed off pictures of diseased lungs (in colour) and pinned them up arounf my room....maybe you could do that to help you? anyhows, i hope that this helps. x

Hypnosis is also very very effective if you really want to quit. And the gum is very good, gives you something to do with your hands, getting it out of the fiddly packets.

And stay away from people who will give you a fag if you ask for one. Warn them not to give in to you. Good Luck!

The way I quit something is to seriously overdose on it, then I get really sick and sick of it. Smoking's never been a big thing for me so I haven't considered quitting, but I did quit consuming alcohol after a wacko week.
My reasoning is if you quit you'll just be fighting your addiction, get genuinely sick of it and you wont to anymore. It is to be noted that doesn't work for everything.

the most valuable attribute is a strong will.

you have to really properly want to stop. none of this "i'll only smoke at the weekend" type behaviour etc.

No offence, but how many people have said that then found they were in over their head?
I really dont like cigarettes but I do occasionally smoke. Mostly when p*ssed.

I think when smoking anything with nicotine in it is best to take a break every fortnight for a couple of days. Enforce those two days and make yourself no excuses.

My grandad gave up like this:
Day 1: x cigs
Day 2: x-2 cigs
Day 3: x-3 cigs
Day N: x-x cigs

If that sounds too much like maths, just ration your cigarettes so that every day (or if you must every two days) the amount of cigarettes you smoke depreicates by one.

Alternatively only by Golden Virginia.
This is cheaper AND if you cant roll, you will not be able to smoke. If you are persistant then you might be able to roll horrible rollies, which in itself will put you off.

But the aforementioned piece of advice is probably best.

A lot, but for some people it's not addictive. I've been smoking for a few years and now I only smoke one a week, mainly out of habit. I'm confident I can stop whenever I want.
