I heard that they recruit about 150 pilot hopefuls each year. Then you experience lots of holding between courses

Utter, utter rot. The RAF will happily recruit you as a pilot now. The flying training system is busy; there are "holds" between courses, and you might find you need to wait, but there's no "waiting list."

The Multi Engine stream is pretty full, and Fast Jet recruitment is slowing to a dozen or so annual courses of around 6-7. Nothing more than that is happening though. You can expect a couple of months between IOT and EFT, then up to 8 months before BFJT, 8-12 months for METS or 3-4 months for DHFS. FJ mates can expect an extra 8-12 months between BFJT and ATTU, and up to a further 10 months for a single seat OCU; but it's been worse in the past and changes every month.
