It's not that bad. Certainly not much worse than most of the rest of London. As long as you have a brain in your head and use it sensibly then I'm sure you'll be OK.

It is rough but you just have to be very careful. I have been followed twice but I was ok in the end. The New Cross Inn has a lot of fights but I definately would not walk alone in the dark, it is not safe.
I wouldn't walk around on my own here at night. But there are a serious lack of males offering to walk me home from the union if i want to go a bit earlier! I am always constantly looking around me when the main gates are closed and you have to walk around the long way.
NB. I have an attack alarm in my pocket anywhere i go in east london.

It's fine.

I was playing table tennis late one night over there. My dad told me to be careful with taking valuables and stuff. I ended up taking my phone, watch, wallet with about 30 quid on me, and mp3 player. (as well as my precious table tennis racket, of course)

Anyway, I didn't think it was any different to many other parts of London.

I havent seen much trouble up in new cross myself, been there for a night out a few times. I get more trouble when I go out to my locals. :s:

i live near new cross. and it really isnt that rough.

during the day its fine, but at night you just need to be a little careful. basically if you lack common sense and walk around at night by yourself with a short skirt on with your mobile out it probably wont end happily

As bad as you would expect from any part of East London/Large City

It's quite a run-down area. I didn't like being there. There are much better areas in East London than New Cross. East London is bad enough, making it south east is...ouch.

Good luck to Goldsmiths'ers!!
At night it's pretty dodge...but it is home to the "New Cross scene", which is as crap as it sounds.

It's more south-east London...than east. With it being in Lewisham and all, postcode SE14 etc...
From what I've seen (went round during the day and night) it seems alright enough I'd say it's better than many parts of london but probably not as good as others but remember you're safer in council and poorer areas like this than you are in swanky rich parts of town, same rule applies where ever you are, use your brain. If you are being followed, get a cab ASAP, if you can avoid it don't go out alone at night, have 999 or 112 already keyed in on your phone and your hand ready to press dial at any time.

Well it's a very artsy/design college, so you have a lot of those sorts of students. But it is a real mix, like any uni.

I am a student there. Everyone is nice and i have yet to met anyone that is pure evil. The student staff are legends (really, i am not saying that just because i am one...). As for the area being rough i have not encountered any trouble myself, although i do advise no solo treks home after nights out in central and don't fall for the old 'scuse me got the time?' question from anyone as that's the start.
There's nothing especially bad about New Cross. I lived there for about 10 years and never once had any trouble. Head further down to Peckham or Camberwell if you want trouble. I don't understand all this apprehension. It's much much better than many other parts of London. I'd be just as careful walking in Chelsea at night as I would be in Lewisham. It's just common sense people.
I recently moved in this area and I never seen any worst place than this...rude peoples all belongs to the drugy dealers and junkies
tfw you realize the thread is 13 years old
