Tom Brown's Schooldays & Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Hello!

Thought I'd set up a topic for those studying the two texts to discuss, though I'm not really sure how many of you are studying them! What do you think to the texts and how are you finding them? Our class are still on TB at the moment, it was quite hard going reading alone. Though have to say it is becoming quite interesting when you actually analyse the attitudes and values behind it in class. Btw has anyone found any good revision resources for them? Litnotes is all our class have found so far....

You study Harry Potter? What school do you go to?

I will be doing Shakespeare, Twelve Night, next year. For one of the AQA AS English Lit&Lang modules, you study and compare two books, written over 100 years apart, and Tom Brown (19th century) and Harry Potter (21st century) were a new pair for 2005.

That sounds so interesting, I wish I'd have done that!
I got full marks for that module (same texts) in June so if you need any help for it PM me.

I'm so pleased that my school didn't opt for that set of texts, as I detest Harry Potter (I'm doing 'The color purple' and 'The scarlet letter' by the way).

Thanks feeling, I may take you up on that offer in the future! I think in the main, Harry Potter is universally popular so most people - I would think - will respond to it in a positive way. I haven't read it for a few years, so we'll have to see. After reading TB, its quite possible to say that this is one of the main books where she got her inspiration from.

you get to study harry potter!! omg! that's so cool! and also slightly unfair - damn shakespeare and chaucer and .... you get the point!

Well, I still have to do Shakespeare. Plus, try picking up Tom Brown - it's no easy read!
I'm in A2 year, and we did TB and HP last year. I hated TB, and didnt even finish it!!! I loved HP though. Our exam last year I found was hard, the paired texts bit. The similarities between the two I thought weren't that obvious. I got a B though, so it obviously wasn't that hard!!!

A good website we used was www.universalteacher.org.uk or something like that... not so much for HP and TB, but it was excellent for the Anthology. Notes and descriptions for every poem in the anthology, really good!

Well, Philosopher's Stone actually came out in the 20th century, not the 21st.

Lol, so sorry, will remember that next time.

The combined English class did those two texts in my school... The Lit class (ie. mine) got the 'classics'.

Thankfully, that is the way I like it.

I would not have minded doing the combined or lit. I would have liked to have done the classics as well, but the reason why I chose combined, was the fact there is no room for development of creative writing in lit.
Tom Brown is brilliant, I didn't study it at school though.

I agree, shame the 2005 film had to divert from the book quite a bit though.

im studying the same texts and can't believe it! HARRY POTTER!
not only do i hate the books but they are intended for 6 to 11 year olds they are the most boring, predictable and unoriginal books ive ever read (excluding the Lemmony snickets series of unfortunate events).I admit i'm not the most well read person but thats one of the reasons i took AS to broaden my Knowledge and i end up doing Harry Potter.(Right thats my ranting and ravin finished)

But let me know how its going and we'll have to compare

lol chester, I'm persuming its got something to do with all the sport in Tom Brown!

I know Kim, but Harry Potter is the book that has the nearest parallels etc to Tom Brown in terms of it being the most modern. On the one hand Harry Potter might be as you see it, aimed for children, but I'd doubt the typical eleven year old of today would read much further than the first few lines of Tom Brown.
