Acting and looking a bit younger than your age

Saw a photographer over the weekend (he's trying to get us into Sports Illustrated, but that's another story  Not for here!) who said that while I was friendly, I had a young nature and he said that it was not such a good thing to have in this (model) industry.

I want to know what he meant by 'young nature', what am I immature or something  Then I told him my plans, that I was working on getting into physiotherapy postgrad, and he looked at me like I was crazy and commented that I was too old to continue studying, and that at 22 I should be working or married with kids  That I acted way too young for the age that I am, not taking into account that I now have a Bachelor of Science in Biology

But seriously tho, what's wrong with being a LITTLE naive for your age, or acting a bit young (he must've also been commenting on the fact that I like animals  ) ?

Wow....the feminists of this world would savagely attack him for making such comments.

I get mocked a little in my student house - i'm the oldest yet they say i look the youngest, sound the youngest and that i am naive - i don't think i am the latter but people, never mind my fellow housemates, generally perceive me as such i think, based purely on how i look - that a blue eyed blondie cannot possibly be sensible, intelligent and world-wisely bla bla. First impressions eurghhh....

See him next, kick him in the frickin balls.
Where did you find that neanderthal?
Ignore him. If it's your nature to enjoy life, then go for it. I'm always being told that I act to young or immature, and i think it's because of looks too, not hair or eye colouring, cos both are dark, but the fact I'm kinda little, peple always say I act like a young kid. Admittedly I do sometimes, but not all the time!

But if anyone who criticizes you for being you, just follow Wizard's advice!
I often get told I look and act young for my age, but I think this is genuinely because I am small, often wear pigtails (my hair is too short to go back any other way), have a young looking face etc. and i like to have a laugh! so people assume that im younger than i am because im not "serious".
i dont think it's a problem - just think of how nice it will be when you're like 40!

danni - your a wonderful, sweet girl, and from what it sounds, full of life...and considering you were being photographer for sports illustrated, that sounds perfect!

perhaps the guy was just hitting on you and just not very good at it like "you should get married and have kids...see anyone you like in the room"

whatever people say - be yourself, because your a lovely person.

Hehe, thanks Wizard!

In my fantasy though about the last comment he made, not too keen on getting sued for something like $10,000 (the standard thread they make if you piss them off  ).

@ Gerbil, I know exactly what you mean  I sometimes act a bit young with some of the programmes I watch on TV for sure, and I too have dark hair, tanned skin etc, but still people think I'm young :p:

On average 17 - 21, despite having turned 22 this year in September

Well, that guy sounds like an ass!

22 is sooo young - think of how many decades you have ahead of you! I'm almost 22 (in five days!) and there is no way I feel ready for adulthood. Some of my non-uni friends are married with mortgages and babies now and I just can't understand why they're so eager to tie themselves to such big commitments so soon. It isn't that I think it's bad to want any of those things, but there are just so many things to do in life and it's not like it's a race.

Anyway, I think you should pay no attention to those kinds of comments. You are young and will be young for quite awhile yet!
Thanks speranza, bikerx23 and MNBStyle!

I knew you guys would understand, because you're all intelligent worldly students, in the know of everything around you and aware that you can be any age to study  I think, ok this is gonna sound weird, that even though I live far from most of you, there's more of an understanding about academic matters than to people who aren't at uni  For instance I would rather talk to you guys about my uni life than heaps of people in real life (that might not go to uni) that I know and may see everyday, which goes to show how amazing TSR is :tsr:

worldly? I wish hunni!
Well - here you can get many different perspectives on occurances, whereas your social group is likely to have a comparable background to you...
also, here you dont have to look someone in the eye when asking a potentially stupid question, although that can be fun too!

No thank you hunny im glad im one of the people who can be of help to you :hugs:
Anyway i think as hes your photographer, hes probablly just trying to control you and make you into the image he wants, and i dont see how your maturity should stop you being a good model anyway.

I like people that are playfull at heart and have a young personality.

Maturity is just being considerate of others in my opinion.

People only become imature when they don't respect other people that's all.

I think you're mature

Don't be bothered by that! I'm 21 and often enough I'm still asked to show my ID when I want to buy alcohol (which you only have to be 16 for here  ) And I'm on my second gap year and only starting uni next September. Mostly, I don't actu particularly young and a lot of my younger friends say they realize I'm not 18 anymore because I'm more mature, but I can be really teenage-ish, too  I wouldn't worry what other ppl think really. As long as you're happy and having fun, who cares? And it's always better to be young at heart than to be bitter and overly cautious as long as you're not harming anyone

Im still pretty immature, and i think i will be for a loooong time. Its not a bad thing to act a little younger than you are. Anyway, who said you have to start acting a certain way at a certain age anyway?! And what ARE you meant to act like? Just be youself
mate I'm not far off 26, and I do the same sort of stuff I did when I was 18. Most people at uni know Im a bit older than them but they get surprised when they find my actual age, I think looks wise I look between 22-24

I think there might be some people I knew back home who look down on me for being 25 and only in my 2nd year of uni, when "by this age" I should have achieved various things, wife, car, house, career...well I haven't got any of them and wouldn't have it any other way.

One of my mates has turned 23 and decided he's "too old" for going out any more, thats like life over! I reckon when I'm in my 30s I'll still be doing the same thing, going out, going to gigs, watching sports, mucking about on the playstation, going to the gym, talking crap into the night with cans of beer and chinese takeaways, blabbering away on msn....at the end of the day you only grow old if you fall for societys pressure to conform

I also reckon I look a lot younger than peers of my own age, I think the stresses of career and marriage age them a lot faster than being a student bum does me

Just the best you guys *hugs you all*

But seriously, I look young anyway and since most people think I'm around 17-21, not 22 in real life, I prolly get away with my acting young in *some* areas (ie. who else wants to see the upcoming Narnia movie like mee!?! I refuse to be ashamed  ). Therefore, when people ask my age after I might, say, comment on what I do and what my interests are, I get criticised :frown:

Ok I shouldn't really be on TSR atm, meant to be checking emails  Before I go though, wanted to say good on you LoveMusic! You rock  You seem like a down to earth person who is confident within themselves, go you :p:

I have the same situation. I turn 23 in under a month yet I'll openly ask around for people to come and watch new Disney movies with me, play video games or make fart jokes. Sorry but toilet humour rocks. But at the same time, I can go in the complete opposite direction and demand utter maturity from my classmates when we work together on projects. I'm a mixed bag really, as I'm sure you are too.

And I look a little younger as well, anything from 18 to 24years old I've been told! I wear pigtails too. Yay.

There are no set behavioural patterns for people regardless of age (or gender, or race etc etc), but there are typical patterns. If you don't fit the typical mould then that doesn't neccessarily mean your way of life is inherently wrong, its just different.

A lot of people have a hard time trying to get their heads around the simple idea that 6 Million people live on this planet so theres no way we're all going to share the same lifestyle.
