They have to move out because they can't be left in the hall alone, but all the staff is sent off for their well-deserved Christmas holidays! The vast vast majority of people goes home fo Christmas.

Ok, I see. Thanks for the answer =)

To be honest, I don't understand the logic of this system. Why do some students need to leave their rooms during their holidays? And where do they usually stay during their Christmas vacations?

Like Sappho said, most people do actually go home for Christmas. The few that don't though are often able to be put up in any spare rooms of the self-catered halls. I know that New Hall took in a few people this Christmas.

You also have to take into account that last Christmas, we had just two weeks off and then exams. Next academic year, we'll get holidays from 23rd December tp 27th January, with no exams afterwards, so I bet more people leave.

Helsy, Sappho, thank you very much for your explanations and patience =)! Now I see that it is absolutely not a problem for a student to remain in St Andrews during the Christmas holidays.

Does anybody know how the kitchens are stocked. I want to go into Andrew Melville Hall, I was just wondering if I'll have to bring my own kettle, pots and pans etc. Also if they do have a good supply, are they in good shape? Thanks

it's something to do with there not being any staff during the christmas holidays.
Most people go home but if anyone does want to stay, there are some rooms offered in DRA.

Electrical appliances are provided. You aren't allowed to bring your own kettle, toaster, microwave etc. You will need to bring your own pots, pans, plates etc. though.

Thank you, now, to IKEA!

Speaking of IKEA...

I'm an international student (will be coming from the US), and I was wondering what exactly I'll need to actually bring with me and what the possibilities of being able to pick some things up there would be, i.e. a UK power strip, bedding perhaps, a clothes hamper, lamp, etc. I haven't been to St Andrews specifically, and so I am unsure as to what the shopping situation for such things would be. If there isn't anywhere in St Andrews, where/what would be the closest place to go and get those things? Thanks!

Hi Carly - there is an Argos store in St Andrews (basically a catalogue store) - www.argos.co.uk Some stuff is branded, some isn't and isn't always great but if you don't necessarily go for the cheapest you can do fine. you can have a look online and you can order stuff from them - trouble is that it tends to only be held for you for a few days...

I suspect Argos will know that there will be lots of students arriving and hence bedding, lamps, pots, pans, cutlery and crockery will be well stocked with these..

PS you will probably want a Duvet and Duvet covers .. I got quite confused by this in the states, I think they are called comforters there?

Splendid! Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. It's going to be a lot easier shopping/packing now.

And yes, duvets are commonly known as comforters here, haha. Thank you again!

I know quite a few medics in Andrew Melville Hall because it is close to the medicine building. New Hall is also very close. But none of the halls are particularly far away because of the size of St Andrews and there will be medics in every hall, so don't base your choice on whether or not it is popular with students on your course.

Hi, I just wanted to check something for when you apply for accommodation. On the application form I didn't realise you couldn't chose specific places, and I quite fancied New Hall. If I put en suite self-catered, is it extremely likely that I'll end up either there or the David Russell Apartments? Just wondering

Assuming you get your first choice (which a lot of people do get) then you stand a pretty good chance of that yes. And especially New Hall since we've become fully self-catered and DRA has gone roughly half and half.
[And a heads up, New Hall won't be New Hall next year. It will be called Agnes Forbes Blackadder Hall.]

Aah, that's good then, and thanks for the heads up

Hi, I've got another question, what are the hobs like in the kitchens, are they induction hobs/gas/electrical? I'm only asking because some pans can't be used on induction hobs

I just received an offer for MSc in Statistics. Could anyone give me some information about the accommodation to St Andrews?
