Hey,

I'll be applying for post-graduation accommodation soon. Could someone please guide me towards which one would be the best?

Also, is it first-come first-served - as in my offer is conditional and my deadline to get back to them is the 31st of May. So, is it cool if I take my time or should I scram to do it at the soonest?

I heard from one of the students, I was hoping it isn't true as I like meeting people from other cultures.

So it's random? (besides other preferences e.g. non-smoking/same sex/quiet) I don't want them to put me in a building with people from the same country and make studying abroad completely pointless.. lol

Thank you

My floor had 12 people on it: 1 American, 1 Indian, 4 Scottish, 4 English, 1 Australian, 1 Irish.... So 1/3 Scot, 1/3 English, and 1/4 International (and 1 Irish). My closest friends from halls are from Scotland, England, Singapore, India, Russia, China and Qatar. Other people may have experienced differently though. I think it's all about who you gravitate towards. Some international students find it easy to gravitate towards those from their own country from what I've seen, but others will not.

The allocation is random.

Sallies is mostly shared rooms (think 2/3 live in shared rooms) which is why its mainly Americans who live there as they are willing to share rooms (its normal to have roommates in college for Americans).

I know people who live in ABH and DRA and its not mostly internationals. One of my best friends shares a kitchen of 10 in ABH and in their kitchen there are 4 Scots, 2 English, 1 Italian, 1 Norwegian, 1 Moroccan and 1 from the Philippines.
Don't listen to that person spouting nonsense  You won't be assigned based on your nationality or ethnicity.

Thank you!

I really want to apply for en suite, as I want to have my own bathroom, but standard self-catered (Albany Park) is like £2500 cheaper... so I haven't decided which one I'll pick for 1st choice :frown:

It asked for a photograph on the application... I may have uploaded a selfie :s ... Do I need to change it to official ID photo?

Thank you

Haha no I don't think so but they may use it on Matriculation cards.

I've seen quite a few ridiculous selfies so don't worry

As long as they approve the image, you're fine! My matric picture is a phone selfie as I had to send it in that day and I was away from home  I've seen some very bad quality pictures, as it doesn't have to beassport quality, just enough to identify you x

Yup but I will be graduating soon :frown:

Life here at St Andrews is fantastic, there are faults but other places have them as well.

Depends what you're looking for.

Gannochy House is the most central, and has corridors rather than contained flats inside. It looks like **** outside but is quite nice inside. It's also quite cheap.

Albany is the cheapest and has contained flats. It's a 15 min walk from town but it's near East sands (which is good) and they throw good parties and events.

DRA / Fife Park are expensive and really nice and modern, but like 20 mins walk from town, and it lacks the same community atmosphere cos it's so big.

Deans Court is catered and a little bit posh, nice little community and the people that I know stay there love it.

St Gregorys is very central and decently priced. The flats aren't up to much but it's a good community, everyone is sound and they throw decent parties.

I've heard rumours Gannochy and St Gregs are undergrad only next year though, which would be a pretty raw deal for postgrads if true.

Unfortunately, Gannochy is now partly an undergraduate catered hall, and will be entirely undergraduate by next year. St gregs, as far as I'm aware isn't being turned UG but it isn't listed under PG- maybe it's being upgraded? There is another set of properties (Angus and Stanley Smith) on the university PG website (https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/accommodation/pg/residences/) which at least gives a basic overview.

Hey all,

Incoming undergrad from America here, and was wondering how strict halls are in terms of decorations/extra furniture i.e. shelves, lamps, etc? Also, just realized that I put "socializing" as one of my hobbies on my accommodation card: I'm going to guess that that was a regrettable decision.

It depends on your cleaners; mostly they don't care if you've got stuff up, but some do and will take them down and take them to the office. I've had posters and notes stuck up on my wall all year with no problems. Not sure about shelves, but I have lamps and some storage containers. As long as anything electronic is PAT tested, it's fine.

As long as it hasn't got a heating element in it (i.e. kettle / iron / candles) it should be okay but it does depend on your cleaner...If you do want to have things not allowed just hide it in your cupboard or drawers when they do the PAT testing.

Hey Snaps, im in the same situation, i'm going to apply to Fife Park, seems really annoying to have to wait to be unconditional until they give you accom though. Understandable i guess though. Which course have you applied to if you don't mind me asking?

Hi!! I just have a quick question about applying for first year accommodation. I want to put standard catered as my first choice (then standard self-catered, then probably Andrew Melville and en suite self catered), and I understand standard catered can be very oversubscribed so if I say that I would like a roommate would I be disadvantaging myself in getting a place in standard self-catered or Andrew Melville (if I didn't get standard catered)? If I can't get into catered I really don't want the extra expense of an en suite.
Thank you in advance!!
