History I think, is one of the most competitive courses at York, so to have an offer you must be doing well.

Can't really compare it to other unis that much, but I do think over the last couple of years York has started to rise up to it's reputation more become more difficult to get into. Certainly in some subjects (probably including history) it's up there with the others in terms of difficulty of getting in.

From all those uni's you mentined, only Bristol has a greater applicants/entrants ratio.

I wouldn't say so - one of my friends last year got rejected from York but accepted at other 'top' unis.

True enough, but as anecdotal evidence it works well enough.

Don't worry about what some others say, what ever it is, it is not easy to get into York uni compared to most others and as I said, history is one of the hardest to get onto. The course it one of the best in the coutnry. You did well to get an offer. One or two people seem to have it to put down York at every opportunity, even though they go to the university themselves.

good god man, its not easy to get into york for history, take my word for it.

I think the people saying it is easy were joking! It doesnt really matter how competetive it is, you get 6 choices so may as well apply and if you get an offer than good for you, if not unlucky.
There are over 2500 applicants to read history and there are 185 places which comes to around 14 candidates per place. Not really very easy if you ask me. I know two historians well and they're both exceptionally clever in my opinion - not to mention that one of them turned down an offer from Cambridge. Then again, statistics don't tell the whole story - if you feel you can do well at York then come here and if not then don't. Ultimately as you progress through the course, the institution itself becomes less important as there is more emphasis on personal study. But no, I don't think York is easy to get into.

It is the same for almost every other subject at York, they are all massively popular. People choose York in spite of being accepted at Oxbridge, you know. It's a fabulous place!

This is true two friends of mine turned down history offers at Oxford to study at York.

aww! they probably wanted less work! 4 hours a week ****ing hell!

It gets worse in the 2nd year, my mate had 2 hours a week this term, and it was all on one day, in one block, so he basically had 6 complete days off, per week.

i resent that, its 5 hours a week!. Even then loads of people on my course don't turn up to seminars.

York is definitely not an easy place to get into and I resent anyone saying that it is! I do English and, along with history, it is one of the most oversubscribed and difficult courses to get into. You did well to get an offer. They rejected someone I know who got into Oxford (what do Oxford know - bloody idiots). I applied to UCL, Bristol and Durham (of which I got an offer) but decided to come to York. It is a good place to be.
