Stupid Foot!!!

Well this is a bit of a rant really but wondered if anyone else is in/has been in, this postition before. In July I pulled my Achielles (sp?) tendon in my foot and it was really swollen. I had just completed nearly three weeks of Duke of Edinburgh expeditions so was very over exercised.

Anyhoo, went to the hospital and they gave me some crutches and told me to rest alot. So I did, the problem went away and so did the swelling and pain. So I was happy.

For some reason I didnt give the crutches back but Thank Goodness!!

Last week, I got up and there was a big pulling sensation in the back of my leg, then I stepped out of the bath and the pain shot back up my leg. So I cursed alot but then had to rush shopping and didn't think anymore of it. Until I got home (after many painkillers) to discover my problem had arose again, my ankle was so swollen.

So now I'm back on crutches and really depressed. I can't do anything for myself, I get so annoyed about having to ask everyone to help me all the time. I can't do anything for myself and it gets to me alot. What makes it worse is that my friends are so unhelpful they just laugh or make a joke of it!!

Has this ever happened to anyone else? How did you cope?

Thanks xxxx

A lot of sleep. Don't use painkillers, they will aggreviate it.

My mom had a bone in her foot broken and re-set and she said the recovery for that was horrible. People don't realise how difficult it is to do everything. You can't carry stuff easily, it is really tiring to get around and people don't help you at all.

The worst stuff for her was that she couldn't drive due to her cast, so she had to take the bus in and out of town because I was too young to drive her places at this point. Firstly it was hard to get on and off the buses and secondly if they were full she had to stand..on one foot, holding her crutches cos nobody would offer her a seat. That really pisses me off.

Tell your friends to stop being such insensitive bastards and to help you out a bit!
Thanks! The doctor said to rest, use crutches, that it was badly pulled/torn and that ibroprofen (sp?) would keep the swelling down....which it doesn't.

my friends are evil!!

Aww it suck having an injury like that. Last year during the ski season I partially tore one of the ligaments in my knee and it sounds like a very similar sort of pain. My knee was hugely swollen and throbbed all the time. I was prescribed these things called T3's (Tylenol 3's) which are Tylenol with codeine. It sorted out the pain so I could sleep but boy did I get high off those pills the first few times I took them. I was all woozy, sleepy and drunk feeling!

The absolutely essential thing is to keep as much pressure off your ankle and try to rest it as much as possible. I found that elevating my knee with a couple of pillows and trying not to bend the joint really helped. I ended up having to put a brace on to hold it still because I kept moving it unintentionally in my sleep and waking up in serious pain! After all these stupid pills my best cure for pain was to smoke a bit of pot before bed to help myself drop off to sleep and have a joint ready to go if I woke up. Not exactly conventional medicine but boy it worked!

The main thing is that even after you think you are healed treat the tendon really carefully for a good month. Don't do any extreme movement or stretching cos it takes a hell of a long time to heal this sort of injury if it's torn.
I chipped my ankle bone a couple of years ago and had to fly to New Zealand (27 hour flight!) the next day. It sorted itself out eventually but was very annoying. Keep the injured leg at a higher level than your hips when you sit down, eg. put it on a chair in front of you, this will bring the swelling down by loads.

I had that once - really hurt. Luckily for me it never returned.
