The professors all seem to be celebrities. Looks like they are selected for doing TV shows rather than academic talent. I wonder if this is an ego trip for the founders?

I know I keep posting this all over the place, but it is important that people realise it so that they dont get caught in the trap.

You can study the exact same modules via distance learning for a very small fraction of the price.

Apart from the diploma, every single module is available from here...and the diploma is only going to contain a rundown of some pop-academia books.

When you have 14 of the worlds best scientists/professors/teachers in their respective fields, prestige and tradition count for nothing lol. Becuase Cam has been with us for little over 800 years, but this new university can just start up in an instant and compete, what does that say?

It doesn't matter if you have the worlds best professors at that university, at the end of the day you'll have to study like if you were in any other university.

Yes, that's what I was thinking.

It took over 800 years for Oxford and Cambrdige to build their reputation... it's kinda laughable that these guys theink they can do the same :/

Especially since they're just scrounging off the University of London :z

If anyone's interested, they have a very comprehensive website up - however since it's only just been launched, you can't find it on google, so here's the link: http://www.nchum.org/

I couldn't help but notice this from their site:

"One-to-one tutorials are becoming a rarity even at Oxford and Cambridge"

To me, that is indescribably petulant.

I'll also quote what somebody said in another thread:

I particularly enjoy the claim on their website that 'New College offers the highest-quality education' despite the fact that they haven't yet educated a single person. It's like a virgin boasting of their prowess in bed.

Realistically, let's say you have an offer from Oxford and an offer from this university (both for History), are you really going to risk going to this new university or are you going to go with the safe option of hundreds of years of reputation of Oxford? That's why this new university will have no good people studying there, only rich kids who didn't get in to good universities (sort of people who get expelled from private schools for example).

This. If I was given the choice I would undoubtedly go with Oxford/Cambridge. The history of both universities are remarkable and unique and I'd love to be part of this history given the opportunity.

They are all professors because of academic talent. This has led to some of them to working in high-publicity domains; the former had to come before the latter.

Anyway, it is a win-win situation for the college. Lots of undergraduate students go to prestigious universities, say Oxford, without any clue why they are prestigious (i.e. Professor X is a specialist in subject Y), but this will not be the case with NCH.

I know they do seem to have a rather inflated opinion of themselves....! Interestingly, though 1:1 tutorials in your 1st year/basic modules at oxbridge ARE rare, you get (e.g for Law at Cambridge) two a week of 1:2 supervisions, rising to 2.5 in 2nd and 3rd years, whereas New College seem to only be planning to offer one a week...and I'm sure spending double the amount of time but sharing the academic with one other will be much more valuable than a solitary 1:1 session! So even the part of their system that they ought to be best at, given the fees they charge and that tutorials are so expensive to run, isn't as good as oxbridge...what hope is there for the rest of it, like libraries and lectures and so on? Even if they could compete on all other bases, which they can't....

Edit: tracked down the person who said that first, they deserved some serious rep

Refuting the speaker does not refute the argument.Just because I talk **** doesn't mean what I just said isn't plausible.
You basically just have nothing interesting to add.

Does this mean that the degree you receive and thus your qualification will be form UoL? Why would you pay £18k a year when you're not even going to have a prestigious name on your CV? :s-smilie:

I'm genuinely curious as to how this will pan out. The idea of a 'core' skill set to accompany a degree sounds particularly interesting.

When they say one-to-one tuition though, I don't think many students will be having sessions with their 'big names'. Most of them seem to be retaining roles at other institutions, and on top of that, they presumably have hefty media commitments - how much time does that leave for 'NCH'?

The whole 'inferior to oxbridge' thing, in terms of grades they're asking for at least AAA. That's more than any of the other unis where LSE, Durham, UCL etc. have ABB, BBB etc. courses.
