Scared it'll break again.

OK, I had a boyfriend for a year and a half, but we split up just over a year ago (both fine with it). It was a distance thing, so we only saw each other at the school holidays, and sex was a very regular thing then. However, two of those times the condom broke and I panicked and took morning after pills both times. They made me sick, so I really want to avoid it happening again. There are a few possible reasons I can think of - don't know if the fact that I shave my pubic hair might affect it, or the fact that I have a latex allergy so have to use the special non-latex condoms (still always Durex brand), erm.. I'd guess he was a pretty regular size, and they seemed to fit on ok, so I don't think he was too big or anything. Ummm..... any ideas?

Is he squeezing the tip before he puts it on? Otherwise there will be air trapped in the tip and this could make the condom burst. xx

both take STI tests and then if you're both clear then go on the pill?

If you dry up the condom can split easily. I had an insane amount of condoms split when my and my ex were using them, sometimes she dried up, sometimes they just split for no reason. Usually the guy can tell when it splits. Go on the pill as a back up measure?

I've been with my partner for two years and for the first time in the whole two years the condom broke last week! I don't know what it was that did it, but luckily I am on the pill aswell. Consider using an extra form of contraception for protection and reassurance.

Exactly the same thing happened to me although I'm on the jab. All the side effects were worth it when it split!

Hehe  It's definitely much wiser to use a pill/jab AND condoms. You can never be too careful!!!

Pill or some other method for piece of mind?

Thing is I have quite a few problems with my health as it is, and I know how much peace of mind the pill would give me, but I'd reeeeeeally (as in phobic) hate any sort of morning sickness or similar symptoms from being on the pill, and as I said, I don't have a boyfriend right now, (but there is someone I have my eye on ^_^) so it might seem unnecessarily to be constantly protected when I'm not even sure I'll be having much/any sex any time soon.

Um... you're more likely to get morning sickness from being pregnant.

I've never had any type of sickness from being on the pill. However it does affect people differently... why don't you try it out for a while, and if it doesn't seem right for you then you can stop using it?

During the first 3 months I did experience some odd tension headaches, feeling sick, once an UNBELIEVABLE migraine the day after the last pill of a pack and also a period of about 2 months when I could hardly eat, I didn't like anything anymore and only ate about 3 different things all the time that I usually couldn't stand to eat (bizarre) and lost over a stone, but then again 3 months is the 'settling' period iirc. There are some scary side-effects I've heard of (eg. considerable hair loss) but I haven't really had such dramatic problems imo and besides, there are many different types to switch to if you react in an unpleasant way to one.

If you're starting on the pill they always put you on a very low dose one anyway. If you get really negative side effects then you can just stop taking it and your hormones will be returned to normal in a day or two. So to not even try this because you're worried about feeling sick is being silly. You'll be on the lowest dose pill available and you can stop taking it at any time. It's not like a contraceptive injection which once in is inside your body for 3 months or more.

I'm single and on the pill. The reason is because it gives me no negative side effects and this way I'm protected if I should sleep with someone or start a relationship. You have to start pills on the first few days of your period and it can take a while to get totally regular on them so rather than jumping on and off and messing with my cycle I stay on them. It also gives me lighter, less painful periods...another big advantage for me.

There are a bunch of other methods of contraception. You should head to a sexual health clinic and they will talk you through all of them and give you advice for your particular situation. They are free and confidential and are there for purposes just like this.

about being sick after the morning after (both times) - my friend has the same problem and has to take some other random medication as well as the morning after (she's had to take it 3 times in total)...tell your doctor...she's allergic, you could be too!

she was talking bout regular pill, not morning after...

Yeah, I know. That would be the worst worst thing ^_^

I suppose I COULD go on it, just to see what happens. I suppose I'm just not that willing to be on 'medication' just for the sake of it :s-smilie: Are MOST girls on the pill anyway? I mean, for contraception and lightening periods and stuff? How many people out there do you guys think JUST use condoms, and are fine with that?

...and how often does it break for them? hehe :s-smilie: I got so paranoid after the second time it broke that I told my boyfriend I really didn't want to have much sex with him at all any more. I'd thought the first time was a one-off and just dealt with it, but when it happened again... Eek!

Is there any long term damage from the morning-after pill? I mean, IF I just stick with only using condoms, and it does happen to break again, I would take the morning after pill again. It doesn't actually make me vomit, but I feel too sick to eat or do much for the duration of that day.

and then there's the whole dilemma about the condom not being 100% effective - what is the figure these days? and is that even when it's on properly and stays on and everything happens exactly as it should? i.e. could some sperm still get through somehow, like through the material or out the bottom of it and up again? haha, you can see how much I've thought about this... :frown:

Lots of questions. Really..I repeat what I said. Go to a sexual health clinic. They will be able to talk to you about different methods of contraception and discuss your lifestyle and needs. They will help you pick the most appropriate method of contraception. You can take your boyfriend along if you want and you can both talk it over with a nurse. Or you can go alone. They are mostly there to provide information..and free samples hehehe. It can't hurt to get 20 free condoms and maybe some samples of other things like the contraceptive sponge, to use in conjunction with condoms.

It is clear that you take a responsible attitude to preventing pregnancy and un-necessary worry to yourself and your boyfriend. So do the most responsible thing and have a free, private consultation at a clinic and they will answer all your questions and help you to continue to have safe, worry free sex.

Just go on the pill...there are so many out there. Your doc will advise you. It doesn't do much anyway. I have been on it for four years now and never had any problems.

You could always try the female condom
