Do you think she ever actually was at Durham, or are we going to go around and continue to guess from all the colleges?
Well, it obviously wasn't a hill college... :p:

Yep! They're awesome. If I made one telling people to give me money, would that work too?

Tell me your bank account details...including card number, expiry date and the little 3 digit code on the signature strip....and I'll transfer some money into your account

Nah, i could give you 2p at formal if you want though :p:

In answer to the original question: why does durham have a perception of an 'old boys network'?

    Because it's an old University!

Apologies for the topic going off track, that's me and Kathryn, we normally end up derailing things!

Thanks! I'm not sure I need it at the moment though, that nice Nigerian man just transferred a load of money in on the way to his other account, so my overdraft should be cleared. Better check on that...

I think it's all down to personal perception, as to whether you see it as less or more prestigious a University.

Personally i didn't pick it on that, i picked it for the good course and for the fact i fell in love with the city.

I disagree, and think that no, it's not as prestigious as it used to be.

But neither is Oxford or Cambridge. They all used to be very elitist, and with the introduction of new legislation, etc. they have all come a lot closer to the "regular" universities. I think that Durham isn't all that prestigious to be honest....since I got in!

Anyway, league tables don't have a column for prestige. It's something intangible, and subjective. Ask teachers, businessmen etc what they think of Durham, but they can still never speak for everyone.

I wasn't thinking prestigous as in who they let in, I was thinking more along the lines of how well respected a Durham degree is in the job world. I don't think Durham has lost any prestige, I just think that there are now lots of other universities which have the same amount of prestige.
    If you get me......:s:

define "prestigious" and explain how much of a role it plays in your university choice.

personally the whole prestige thing was a complete non - issue - durham was good, and it's an awesome place to be... if it was called poofarts university for the infirm i'd still have gone

I don't think its had that big a drop in league table standing (whatever that means) its just people expect it to be higher (ie top 5) than it actually is because it is considered fairly prestigious, and over all many departments such as Physics, law and History are in the top 5. It's actually been named university of the year for what its worth and climbed a couple of places league table wise and because there was a "better enjoyment of university life than at other comparable institutions" or something. So there you go, come to Durham and you'll enjoy it.

Being uni of the year means it will attract more applicants, which means the standard should increase and hopefully Durham will be higher in the league tables in a few years time.
