Students and prostitution

The national press has recently drawn attention to the greatly increased use of prostitutes in the UK. There have also been anecdotal reports of students working as prostitutes to offset their debts.

Do you readers have any views on this or any idea as to how common it is for students to take such a step to raise funds? For example have you ever done this or do you know anyone who has (please do not identify the person other than to say male or female)

 Well, I haven't heard that one before. I am aware that many female students take up jobs as strippers, etc, to help fund their courses... but not heard of anyone prostituting themselves... although the red light district in Sheffield is right next to where we have most of our lectures..

Ive never heard of that before either. The majority of prostitutes in my area have drug problems and they do it for funds. Plus once you're in that circle, its very hard to get out.

Although there was that girl sometime last year who sold her virginity to pay for her uni fees, personally Id never do anything like that.

There was a male prostitute in my halls this year (he's since left).

They tend to sleep with people they know for money, i.e flat mates, people in halls etc. Funk buddies but with a price.

I know someone who strips at Stringfellows and studies. She makes a lot of money!
I read about some Oxford and Cambridge students doing this because they aren't allowed 'jobs' during termtime,so they sleep with people for money. The article I read interviewed one of them,or something(I can't quite remember now..)...and it said that they don't see it as prostitution and they compared it to a relationship!
There was a piece in one of the student newspapers about that. Some do escort work but I've never heard of any who go as far as actual prostitution.

Oxbridge students set up an escort agency for students to earn money. Apparently its not prostitution... but it caused quite a stir in the papers.

Are they really not? Why not?

Its because their term times are much shorter than everywhere else so they expect you to dedicate your full attention to the task at hand and earn money in your extended breaks.

Not surprising considering the disappearance of any values here in the UK: there are many many girls and guys who regularly sleep with just about anyone and aren't really too picky who it is. So when you're prepared to sleep with a lot of people, why not make money out of it? Especially when you really need the money and sex doesn't represent much for you anyway?

Not really, since they have always had this rule. Technically speaking, it is the other universities who dropped the rule and were 'abnormal'. Anyway, if you really need the money from a job, they will do everything within their power to help you out, or they will offer you jobs or babysitting etc. Most students can live reasonably on the money they have/are given by the uni (Cam promise that they will never allow you to get to the situation where you have to leave due to money problems) and there's really no excuse for turning to prostitution, other than just wanting more, or wanting really bad sex with ugly businessmen. If you want to be a prostitute, I have no problem with it, it's your decision. But don't blame the university or the fact that you are a student.

Oxbridge is full of the abnormal!
