Weird feeling after swimming..felt like I was going to die!

I went swimming yesterday, the water was quite cold. Swam about 20 lengths and got out of the pool. I felt normal in the pool but the moment I got out and walked towards the change rooms, I felt a sudden surge in my head and started feeling really dizzy. I leant against the wall and started having difficulty breathing. It really felt as if I was swinging from side to side and I felt like I was going to collapse. I somehow staggered to the shower and after 5 minutes in the hot shower, I felt normal again.
Why did this happen? It was really scary!

Maybe it was just the sudden change of pressure and temperature, if the water was quite cold?? I don't really know much about that sort of stuff, but this has happened to me before, and after I come out of a cold shower. Might be something to do with water then. I think you should try taking it quite slow next time.

Did you feel any palpitations/usual sensations in your chest/rapid heart beat?
Talk to a doctor? That doesn't sound right :s-smilie:

I don't know if it is exactly the same, but I sometimes feel something like that what you described. Have a weird feeling in my head and feels similar to that. I just sit down or lay down and after a few seconds it's fine again.

If you are worried or if this happens again, just see a doctor. Nothing to lose in that.

That's just a little postural hypotension, completely normal in a 19 year old male like yourself.

Yes..and I also felt like puking.
Kind of like how you feel if you get up too fast? Could just be that you got out too quickly and your body couldn't adjust fast enough. As long as you're perfectly fine now I'd say leave it, but see a doctor if it happens again.

sounds like a head rush or because of the sudden temperature changes mixed with the exercising. eat and drink more really

Well it could be nothing, just a one off, but I'd make an appointment with your GP and go have a word. You want to exclude an exercise induced arrhythmia.

I had that after running 8k... My doctor told me it was because I'm sleep deprived and that my sugar count is low. For me it's because I was tired too, is the feeling like the one you get when you almost faint?
you have been breathing properly while doing your 20 laps, yes? you know, breathing in and out regularly instead of holding your breath for long periods and doing occasional inhaling? ^^

need to keep that oxygen floooowing, brotha.
Did you have any interruptions/deviations from normal cognitive movement? Did your stare blankly into space? Weren't able to speak etc.? Could've been an absence seizure, but given that you had slightly different symptoms I don't think this would be an entirely correct diagnosis

It was quite cold outside as well. Not freezing but not hot.

Well I couldn't walk for about 5 seconds yes. I didn't stare blankly into space though, I was just finding it really difficult to breathe and felt like the world was rotating really fast.

I sleep 8 hours a night so I doubt I'm sleep deprived. I've never fainted before but yeah it felt like I was going to collapse at any moment

Sudden blurred vision, along with a ringing/buzzing in the ears that blocks out every sound other than particularly loud ones, and a tingling/numbness that spreads through practically your entire body until you're all but desensitised to your surroundings, including finding it very difficult to grab onto things, even though you know you'll fall over if you don't (cue leaning against a wall and trying to keep as still as possible). This will typically last around 5 to 10 seconds, and after-effects include brief dizziness and a rush of warmth as sensation abruptly returns.

Often observed after remaining in a somewhat awkward position for too long. :yep:

That's something I experience at least once a week, generally after I have a good stretch (be it at whatever time of day). Once or twice I've ended up on the floor, since I hadn't the foresight to position myself near a wall or something. :pinch:

I've no idea how well it correlates with your experience, but I've hazarded a guess that it may be due to a temporary cutting off of circulation and/or oxygen to somewhere important. :s: (Yes, I remain in a state of ignorant bliss when it comes to biology. :p:)

I have no idea how serious it is, though. :dontknow:
Oh lord an absence seizure? Doubt it!

OP it sounds like you had a big of a bad headrush, and a vasovagal. Happens to the best of us, if it happens again see your GP if you're worried about low blood pressure. However eat right before a swim, keep hydrated and maybe just get out the pool slower next time?

I wouldn't worry at all!
