Welll... Currrently stands at 6 weeks lambing, 9 weeks SA vet, 1 week mixed and 1 week bovine specialist, like 50 weeeks dairy but i milk cows as my job soo , 1 week falconry. I'm sure there's more but can't remember. And i have alot but no variety so do kennels etc. Oh i did a weeks equine too!
If any of you lot are based around Bedfordshire gimmee a shout and i can probably get you farmwork. But it will be hard hard work.
TBH guys, best advice for these next two years is get your head down, work hard and play hard.
PS. Louise - You smell
even without the dairy you have so much :L my boyfriend works in a dairy as well (full time now) so i might be able to work with him when his boss goes on holiday the falconry sounds really good as well, first person i've heard of with it! guess I'll just have to keep up the variety and just general vast amounts of time...
Toms lying, his farm work isnt hard, he sits around drinking tea and listening to radio 1 all day, texting me!
As much as it pains me to say it, toms advice is right also, variety and quality is much better than quantity, for example, you could have a zillion weeks on farms, at vets etc, but if you dont have a 'core' placement, eg kennels, dairy farm, stables etc, then chances are you wont get an interview from liverpool - cant say about the others but def true for liverpool!!
PS. Tom - Go die in a hole
haha sounds like my boyfriend's job, exactly the same!
yeah im trying to get most of the basics covered this summer - ive done kennels, stables, small animal vets, sheep + bit of lambing, and should get more SA vet and dairy this summer (and hopefully another pig/sheep/poultry farm too)
after that the only essential i need is LA vet. which leaves me year 12 to do that + top everything else up + find more variety e.g. abattoirs etc
edit: i'll be able to get tonnes more sheep this summer as well, and horses if i have time.

I never saw anything with a farm vet I got a couple of weeks with an equine vet, but all the farm practices within 50miles of me are owned by one company, who refuse to take work experience students
the occassional 'odd' placement looks good and is a good talking point - i spent a week at a wildlife centre, and a week at a llama park looking after llamas, alpaca's and reindeer! was really interesting and learnt loads, so at interview could talk all about them and how llama's are prone to obesity due to their opportunist eating habbits

Oioi! Today i scraped the yards, then spent 4 hours driving backwards and forwards with trailer loads of muck with the John Deere, then steam cleaned a tractor, then mucked out another set or barns, then milked, then a twin calving. 2 coffee breaks and lunch for 10 mins. It's my other job where i get paid for doing naff all
But i DID have radio 1 blasting out of the surround sound in the parlour Liverpool rejected me outright i'm guessing due to missing the core placements, so either do them or don't apply there. Oh and DONT apply to glasgow if you're english and live anywhere south of Newcastle. They will just reject you because they favour scottish students.

oh and thanks for the advice, i will
Oh and 1 days intensive chicken farm... My best friends Dad is the manager for a 600,000 chicken 'enriched' intensive unit

DO THEY REALLY FAVOUR SCOTTISH STUDENTS? D: I thought this was a thing of the past! I do live in Newcastle but Glasgow is my definite fave so far, I'd be gutted if they didn't at least interview me...

Simply Yes. As far as i am aware you stand a HUGE disadvantage by being English. But i applied there on the off chance so apply and see how it goes?? Edinburgh ftw in Snotland though!

The representatives I've spoken to from Scottish unis say otherwise... But then again the Scottish do tend to hate us, as a general rule :P I will definitely be applying still! Both to Edinburgh and Glasgow

Hahaaa believe them or believe me I don't mind. I was led to believe it was equal yet know a lot of scottish and N. Irish people who had interviews and offers and not a single pom. Up to you though, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol, RVC would be a strong choice

i live like 30, 40 mins from bristol so its fine for me haha and RVC is only 2.5 hours by car max. nottingham and liverpool are then the next nearest! so those are my choices in order :P
not because im scared of homesickness, but because i want to stay close to my horses and do the odd competition when not at uni/EMS, and also stay near my boyfriend assuming we're still together then! its quite a long way off but you never know
Edinburgh's closest for me Like an hour away on the train. I'd prefer to be near home because I get homesick when I'm not enjoying myself (fingers crossed this is not the case) and also because train fares will be soo much cheaper! Also I love the Scottish countryside because I'm sad
Hahaaa WHATEVER Uni you end up at you will love it. I used to bum notts when i was like 15/16, then RVC at 16/17 and now i love Bristol, and HATE notts and cambs when i went round, oh and glasgow and liverpool are scum cause they rejected me
Plus don't expect to end up where you want to go the most, but you will love it wherever you are!!
Bristol is closest for me. But to be fair Scotland is miles away and I'm highly unlikely to get in to Cambridge [not sure I'd like to go there anyway] So that's 3 of the 7 out probably...so then I'm just left with the others to fill up my 4 places. I'm not fussed where I go at the moment, I think I'd just be lucky to get a place So I'm not setting my sights anywhere at the moment, but to be fair I haven't been to any open days so I don't know.
oo where (approximately, im not a stalker ) do you live then? i am literally EXACTLY the same as you in that logic & choices!

The middle south coast part of the south-west of the UK-if that makes any sense to you [cryptic much?!] I won't go anymore specific in full view of the internet, if you really want to know what county etc. etc. then you'll have to message me or something!

if you say that one more time, I WILL stab you. With a toothpick. It will be a slow and painful death. You have been warned...
Although before I went to look around, liverpool was my last choice, and between open days and getting my offers in went up to first choice! As you can tell if you listen to any current applicants, or current/ex vet students... anywhere you accept/go to you'll instantly become fiercly loyal to, and will defend to the death... but you'll never EVER speak to a vet who says 'i wish i'd gone to X instead.'

GUYS! I'd hate for this to get spread around! it's not true - as long as you have the necessary experience and you impress them on your merit you've got just as much as a chance as everyone else. I'm living proof as I'm as southern as they get! as is my friend from Sussex who's up there with me!
btw.. Glasgow ranked first for veterinary medicine in the latest league tables
