New tattoo on saturday-need advice on numbing!

Hiya guys. Im getting a new tattoo done on sat as a chrimbo pressie (its my signiture on my bum...like a cabbage patch doll).
My boss mentioned to me something about a cream you can get which when put on two hours before can completely numb the area- so i suppose a local anaesthetic. Does anyone know of such cream? I can go withou cos i've had one on my lower back and i was ok but i'd rather avoid the pain.

Any clues or suggestions?

Actually, if you've already got one on your lower back then I doubt you'll find this new one painful at all. I'm tattooed on my upper arm and since its very fleshy there I didn't find it properly painful at all - and I'm needle-phobic with a low pain threshold to boot!
Just relax into it - I didn't think it was a negative kind of pain at all.

Enjoy it!
If it's on your butt i'd assume you'll hardly feel it anyway :p:

Okay, if you're really intent on numbing it, I can only recommend you either Google it or drop in at a pharmacy and ask them if they can suggest anything.

Edit: I know they use a cream called 'Emla' in hospitals but I'm not sure whether you can buy this over the counter.
You're getting a tattoo of your signature on your bum? I'm gonna quote your (post) signature here: Really?

I wouldn't bother. And, if you do, phone your tattoo artist beforehand to make sure they're okay with it. Pain is meant to be felt for a reason - if it feels extremely painful then somethings probably wrong - and if it's numbed, then you won't know. It won't be too unbearable, and I don't imagine your signature is that big anyway, haha.

If you are intent on numbing it, there is a cream called Emla. But, like I said, check your tattoo artist is comfortable.

Red665- please dont bother posting if its not constructive. YES really. I am getting it done and i've worked on it myself and im confident about the design , i wouldnt do it if i had any doubts over how it might look.

kate-very good point , your probably right , although the likelyhood is that i will go to the chemist to see what i can get.

Phone your tattoo artist and ask them if they are OK with you using something. If they are then they will also probably be able to advise on the best thing to use. To be honest a signature will take maybe 10 mins to tattoo on..probably not even that, plus it's on a fleshier part of the body & not so painful. I'd just use nothing and grit my teeth (my usual tattooing strategy) but I get that everyone is different!

My tattooist actually provided the cream for me, he didn't tell me the name he just said it was the "Magic" cream they use in hospitals  But if you ask in your pharmacy about numbing creams i'm sure they'll be able to advise you I'm sure someone told me It was Ametop Cream or something like that But I'm not sure whether it can be used for tattoos :frown:

seriously, it won't hurt much more than having a needle dragged over your skin, I had mine done just over my lower abdomen and it really didnt hurt at all, so i doubt an extremely fleshy part of the body will not hurt! It only hurts when there is bone close to the skin,

Woah there, chill your boots I was simply asking that's all! When I was in the states this year there were heaps of people with their names tattooed on them, I've just never heard of someone getting their signature done, is all. Just a question though: what happens if you get married and change your surname? or your signature changes in the future?

Check BME for advice.

You can get EMLA cream on prescription, but you need to leave it in a thick layer and cover with clingfilm so it might be a bit weird on your bum (and poss sitting down probs depending on location!). Also, like someone else said, you need to check with your artist if they're happy about you using it.

Or you could just try ibuprofen, as you managed before so it can't be much worse this time.

:p: Stevo on Jackass got 'Your Name' tattooed on his bum cheek!

When I went with my cousin to get his tattoo done the tattooist rubbed a cream in and put clingfilm over it to keep it in. If you ring your tattooist I'm sure they will know what you mean and will give you a name for the stuff.

Get one of those small bottles of whiskey (300ml)!! Will do the job nicely and warm you up at the same time and act as an antiseptic!!!!

And thin the blood out and no self-respecting tattoist would work on someone inebriated.

it's worth keeping in mind that a lot of the time they don't numb areas because it can make the skin swell slightly and therefore make it far more difficult to tatoo evenly as you haven't a clue what the tatoo will look like when the swelling goes down. it's the same as when you have your tongue or belly button pierced, they shouldn't use freezing spray or gel as it's hard to pierce in the right place. hope that's helpful..
as a few people have already said, it's best too ring first

The cream doesn't work for everyone - it didn't for me and it doesn't at the hospital when I have drips in etc. If you've got one on your back already then I'm sure you'll be able to cope with on on your bum. Although I did find it hurts MORE on the fleshy bits and less on the boney bits to be honest. (I have one on my stomach/hip, soon to be 2..)

If you want, ask for the cream. It takes 40 mins (approx.) to take effect and you have to sit as still as possible so it doesn't crease and spread to other areas...some Tattooist's charge anything from ÂŁ0 - ÂŁ20 for the cream (robbing b******s) Mine didn't though... Talk to your tattooist about it.
