i think the only way you'd ever get a decent xray of a hamster would be if it was dead

Well, it is up to you. Id say you should talk to the vet and ask if it is neccessary to make an x-ray. I cant really tell you whether it is worth the money, as I do not know how you feel nor what you can afford. Had it been my cat I think I would have taken it to the x-ray, but then cats live much longer than hamsters.
