maybe if you like hot chocolate or cocoa you could have a cup? I dont like it myself  but apparently it works for some.

You could always not bother and just catch some zzzzzzz on the plane
Not entirely giving you the answer you wanted but

Would it not be better to just stay up?

If you sometimes find it hard to sleep at 11, and you gotta be at the airport by 4 - I don't know how long it'll take you to get ready and get to the airport, so for the sake of it just say an hour and a half... might it not be best to stay up?

Thats what i thought mate, but i figured that if i went to "just rest my head" i'd probably fall asleep and end up getting up late, and missing my plane lol.

Anyway i'd probably feel quite sh*t for the rest of the day when i arrive (plane journey is only 4 hours.

I still might just do that, but i wanna sleep!

Have a hot bath at 6, then lay down and read until you fall asleep.

There is another way, but i'd get a warning for writing it on here, so PM me

Avoid computers and the telly today. So switch off!
Nice warm bath and hot cocoa in the evening. Try reading as well.

Also, set loads of alarms, all over the room, if you can. Borrow the family's mobiles! If you have to get up and walk around the room to switch off three mobile phones and an alarm clock, it'll help wake you up. that's especially good if you end up not being able to sleep early.

Yeah, like someone said- aviod computer and tv. And DO NOT take a hot bath, it might make you drowsy for a while and thats why people think it'll make one fall asleep easier but in fact it'll affect you in the opposite way since your body temperature is raised (body temperature falls when you sleep). Take a walk, just be outside for a while, it'll help. And take a melatonin pill as soon as possible.

I didn't say a hot bath, I said a warm one. They're very different, a warm one helps you wind down.

really? hm always seems to help me :

I find doing some situps and pressups, having a warm bath and then a mug of warm milk helps me get to sleep.
Reply 16
alcohol helps some people to get to sleep, but it disrupts your sleep and you will often end up waking up half way through the night and not being able to get back to sleep.

lots of exercise does the trick.

You could get drunk? I'm always tired when drunk - easy to get to sleep (ie pass out). Your hangover will have gone by the time the plane lands :p:

Seriously - some exercise (even just going for a walk) will help but if you don't feel tired then don't go to bed. Just getting 2 or 3 hours in will keep you going the next day when you can go to bed early.

Warm milk. heating it activates trytophan, a chemical that induces sleep. don't heat it too much though; just get it warm enough to drink without it burning your mouth.

its tryptophan and its an amino acid that is in many many things. the effect of it doesnt do much for most people and he has probably had alot of it already from all the turkey. i think warm milk is more of a comfort thing for helping some to get to sleep anyway. how exactly does warming milk "activate" tryptophan?
