'healthy' weight

I weighed myself yesterday and was shocked, as it was way more than I was expecting. According to height/weight charts I'm overweight for my height and my BMI should be 25+.

But I disagree! I don't think that I'm overweight and people are always telling me that I have a great body - my measurements disagree with my weight as does my clothes size. Should I still try to lose weight, or just not bother?

Dont panic!! firstly if your happy with your figure its not healthy to lose weight just based on a number which is not 100% accurate at rating healthiness. lots of things factor in when it comes to bmi. such as muscle mass (which weighs more than fat after all). and things such as your chest size. if your really worried go and c your doctor and ask his advice, but if not just cary on as usual if your clinically obese or even at all fat ppl wouldnt tell u u have a good figure would they. if they say it its probably true
[obvious]If you like looking how you look now, then dont lose weight

If you give more value to having a BMI that some chart tells you to have, then lose weight[/obvious]

You may think its obvious, but I don't. I like the way I look, yes, but I also know truly 'fat' people who like the way they look and have no urge to lose weight. I don't want to put my health at risk or ignore a potential problem just because I'm happy with the size of clothing that I wear.

Chel: thankyou, I may just try to eat less fat or something, rather than do anything major.

BMI can be very unreliable especially for people who arent adults, so i wouldnt take too much notice if you think you have a nice body already. what exactly is your height/weight though?

also if youre very muscly then BMI doesnt work (since muscle ways more than fat andstuff). but if youre happy with how you are then just stay as you are; its all good
Reply 7
Are you particularly muscular?
Muscle weighs a lot more than fat
Example: Matthew Pincent (as in one of the 4 British gold medalist rowers from last Olympics) has a BMI of slightly over 27

muscle doesnt weigh more than fat

Umm yeh it really does. Give me another example why some professional rowers are technically almost obese?

Just to clarify you're aware that what I mean is that it's denser and therefore you can be perfectly toned and muscley and look good or properly fat and still technically be the same weight right?

So that they can keep afloat! :p: Don't lol, that was a poor joke that I don't even know why I said it as it's so obvious (to me) that muscle weighs more than fat!

its an over used myth. muscle doesnt weigh the same as fat, they weigh the same. muscle is simply more compact and dense. very few people seem to understand that. its almost as bad as 'high repititions tones you and low repititions gives you muscle' - get it right!

I'm 5'10 and according to the scales, am 80 kilos (which the converter sayts is 12.57 stone)

But my waist is 25 inches and I take an 8-10 on top and 12-14 on the bottom. I'm not particularly muscular but am quite fit as I walk almost every day.

I just don't understand how I can be this weight, too heavy for my height, when I'm displaying no signs of being overweight. BMI doesn't mean much to me, but 'overweight' does.

Edit: I may just give up and not step on the scales again.

i think you will find your scales are faulty or you are reading them wrongly. theres no way in hell you weigh 80 kilos with a 25 inch waist at 5'10 so dont worry. take a look on some other scales and dont worry about it, your not overweight.

How on earth did you come up with that!

Of course muscle is heavier than fat! It's common knowledge, there is no 'myth' about it at all!

--------------

What your saying is just like saying that certain metals don't weigh more, they are just 'denser' than other metals, of course things are more dense, and that is what determines the weight of a particular volume of any given material!

Take an 18 stone fat bastard and an 18 stone muscleman, and guess which one is bigger?

i didnt 'come up' with anything, its a fact. its like saying 'a stone of bricks weighs more than a stone of feathers'. muscle doesnt weigh more than fat. if your gonna say something like that then you can at least mention mass density. for example 1 cubic inch of muscle weighs more than 1 cubic inch of fat - thats true. fat is something like aprox 20% less dense than muscle and so takes up 20% more room. thats the difference.

Thankyou! I haven't weighed myself in years so I didn't know that 80 kilos wasn't a weight I should be seeing. I'll go to one of those machines in boots to have a look.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

Yep bis432 is right - I'm 5'10 too and not fat but fairly curvy - about a size 14 and I only weigh 70!! If you were 80 then trust me that size 8 would fit on one leg :p:

****ing hell, 80kg and 25 inch waist? Don't think so!
I agree. I'm only 5'6", but I have a 27" waist and only weigh 56kg.

I'm 12-14 on the bottom, to be fair. 8-10 on top.

But maybe you're right... I have no idea how weight works in relation to size, just measurements. That'll teach me to weigh myself on a pair of scales I happen to randomly come across in a distant family member's bathroom.

I just had a little panic. Its over now.
