have you tried asking him whats wrong?
well has anything at all changed? Are the people in his class different from before?

A change of scene could help where he does not associate the loss of confidence

I have the same problem with exams. Some of my lecturers behaved quite unprofessionally towards me last year, discussing my grades, saying I was obessed. Since then I have had a phobia of exams, so bad that it impeads my revision.

i know he got the odd bit of bullying but can the 2 things be related and is it possible to get over it?

Yes its a good chance the 2 will be related, as he was bullied twice he may well think to himself now.
"There must be something wrong with me if im getting bullied, maybe these people around me hate me to" etc etc etc

Of course he can get over it with the right support, thats if you can get him to open up first thoe.
He knows why hes so Unconfident now hes just not wanting to open up about it right now.
Try talking to him about it but at the sametime try not to pressure him.
Feel free to PM me or post on here or something if you want to ask anything else
