Prestige of Warwick Maths???

Hi guys, not sure if you've seen, but in the General University Discussion ive been trying to compare UCL and Warwick maths courses. I was under the impression that Warwick Maths is 2nd in the country to Cambridge, perhaps oxford 3rd and bath 4th............

can anyone give me any details/gossip they've heard surrounding the reputation of the course, in particular to oxbridge, UCL and Bath.

ps i was worried by the 22/24 teaching score from the 2001 assessment! lol. Has it improved since?

Why dont you actually visit the two places instead of asking random people at 3 in the morning? Stop obsessing about the statistics too. Do you realise that only a small fraction of the world are literate nevermind numerate- get some perspective. Either of those institutions will set you up for a comfortable middleclass lifestyle so dont fret.
Stats department in Warwick is brilliant.

well warwick maths probabnly has better facilities then oxford or bath...visit, its awesome.
But on the reputation side definately better than bath, but cambridge and oxford are hard ones. as u can't apply to both, cambrige 'rejects' generally go to warwick or imperial (main reason is imperial is chosen over warwick is that it is in the center of london so they think they'll have a better social, but if ur socialble there are like 10000 other people ur age at warwick so u wont be lonely)
Oxford has the prestiege of being oxford, but warwick is well respected by the people who know (so the people who will give u jobs) generally cleverer people can be found at warwick than oxford, but oxford is oxford.

I was under the impression that Warwick was still #1 for maths over all... It certainly has a lot kudos (and is also an amazing uni ) If you've got specific questions about the course etc I have a friend reading Math @ Warwick who I could ask for you?

Go visit the places, don't just go on prestige, check you like them. Because your so worried about getting onto the most respect you are giving off the impression that you are doing a maths degree to get a good job to live the middle class lifestyle.

I'm doing maths at warwick.

First of all. Student(undergraduate) wise, cambirdge has the best mathematicians in the country and some of the best in the world. after that warwick, oxford, bath, ucl, imperial etc are all almost the same since they all require an AAB or AAA in a levels. Oxford's interview is not that difficult to cope for a moderate, not easily stressed person who likes the subject. Also no university other than cambridge requires STEP exam with excellent grades, an exam which distinguishes extreme ability and mathematical insight.

Techologically (buildings, labs etc) I think it's Warwick>Imperial>Cambridge>rest

Reputation wise the best one is again cambridge, with Trinity, it's best college in maths, having more fields Medalists than all oxford's colleges together. Then it's oxford due to the(still) world wide reputation and then imperial.

Now about the mathematics stuff of all the aformentioned universities it depends on what subject we're talking about. For example warwick is very strong in geometry (Differential, algebraic etc). Imperial is extremely good in mathematical physics (which in my oppinion is the future of physics). Cambridge is always good in more abstract areas, like group theory, fields, rings, number theory etc.

Ummm... dunno how you got that impression from that post! Anyway, as far as I know, maths at Warwick is very well respected and from what I've heard pretty well-taught. I certainly wouldn't be comparing Warwick and UCL on reputation though - both are pretty good for sciences in general and I can't see any employer picking a graduate from one university over the other on the basis of university alone. If I was deciding whether to go to one or the other, it would be on the basis of the type of university I wanted to go to - Warwick is a beautiful campus university based in the countryside (though with plenty to do and within easy reach of towns/cities), whereas UCL is based in London which is clearly quite a contrast. If you're tossing up these two courses, I'd pick on the basis of that, not highest reputation because there's really not much in it.

I chose Warwick over Imperial for maths, so... no.
Ive had an offer from warwick of AAB in maths, physics and chemistry plus I have to take either AEA or step. However, I have an offer of AAB from Durham and I dont know which to choose. I am predicted AAA and my insurance will be Sheffield of offer ABC. I dont want to choose Warwick as my first choice as that means if I fail Step but get the grades I could end up in Sheffield when I could have gone to Durham, though I think I prefer Warwick. Also, what is the latest date you can enter for AEA and STEP?
Thanks.

Don't you have the other 3 standard offers as well?

You should get:
AAB plus STEP/AEA
AABa (with Maths and Further at A)
AABa (with Maths at A and Further AS at a) or
AAAB (with Maths at A)

That's a standard offer they give to everyone if I'm not mistaken. I'm considering a Warwick offer and I will probably not take STEP/AEA.
That is the only offer which applies to me as Im only taking A-levels in maths, physics and chemistry.

do as further maths, fp1, d1 and m2 and then you're laughing!!
I'm at Warwick doing straight Maths too, I think that it's an excellent course. I obviously can't compare it to other courses, because I haven't done them, but I think that if you choose your University on the REA score (as I very nearly did), you're making a big mistake. If you go to Warwick and you like what you see there, you'll have an amazing time on the course.

If you have any more questions, please drop me a PM or email =)

Is there anyone who is doing BSc Economics and Mathematics out there? Whats the course like? (I applied for it  ).

i heard nottingham's really good for maths too

[just to throw a spanner in the works!]

in my humble opinion, london unis arent as good for social life etc - and i live in london/have lots of friends here@uni who i visit and chat to. there's lots to do, but there's less of a uni atmosphere.

I applied on the 25th of January last year but I think that was very close the deadline.

I'd agree with spy007 to be honest, is there any way you could pick up FM AS? FP1 is not that difficult, and neither are any of the descision modules.
Aside from that, take AEA and STEP, as AEA is easier and that way you have two cracks at hitting your offer...
