In high school I had a little problem but nothing major. At college and university I havent encountered any problems yet. It's a weight off your shoulders.

the only thing i would like to say is in regards to your last question:

does it actually make a difference to their daily life?
i am a heterosexual girl and i can safely say that ever since puberty kicked in being attracted has become a huge part of who i am in my daily life. call me shallow or whatever you want but i think wanting love and affection from someone outside your family circle is an instinct. because of this i think being gay makes just as much difference to your personality in your daily life as it does in a straight persons life, which in my experience is a lot of difference.

i'm still not out and really should be.
do people think that being gay in our society makes their lives harder? does it create more barriers? do gay people use this card as a defense mechanism? does it actually make a difference to their daily life?

Yes, being a batty man is hard.

Life is hard. End of story.

I think it's unfair how homosexuality can be treated as a disease in this society. Hopefully now that two gay individuals can marry, it will change the views of many stubborn homophobes. Fear is based on what people hate. There is nothing to be afraid of about homosexuals therefore it should not be a vile subject. The same applies for racism. I think it's silly if people believe they have to act what appears to be 'socially proper' to be accepted. I don't see why being gay should make any difference to your life than being straight. Approach this matter with an open mind. Don't worry about things that you might believe others may take as abnormal. If it's normal to you, remember it's the homophobes that are being abnormal by not accepting the situation. It shouldn't at all make a difference to your life unless you let it.

It's great. Come out, it's great. You make better friendships when people know the real you.

Well it is often the case that people act cosmopolitan and tolerant towards 'outed' homosexuals, but their private view of them changes and a great deal of behind-the-back ridicule occurs.

A good way round the problem is to just be careful who you admit it to; i.e. discreet "reciprocants".

I actually dont think it makes any difference!! We are living in a globalized world where being gay or straight shouldnt be a hindrance in our society. It is close minded ppl that make it a HUGE problem.

Read the Bible and it tells you it's a sin to go to the toilet. Please. And the Catholic Church is against all contraception, even when it could save the lives of thousands who die from HIV/AIDs. Little the church says is right/wrong, is actually morally or intellectually right/wrong.
Ridiculous religion and BNP members aside, few people actually have a problem with gay people nowadays. But come out when you feel it's right for you - no-one can tell you when.

to ask if it makes a difference in our daily life, well you will find the answer to that in how being straight makes a difference to your life. it doesn't: you just do things in a different way! being gay is a part of you, but far from the only part. i'm out and very comfortable with it, but that's only because my friends can see past it, and don't consider it a problem. that's what real friends do, and i'm sure yours won't be any different.

If this slips into yet another debate, so help me god, I'll post anthrax to your house. You wanna debate go D&D (or alternatively jump off a cliff).
I don't think it matters if your gay in your career anymore, as for in society not so much. Gays have self inposed a want to stay in gay communities, sortof as a safe guard. The main argument would be, if I were to go with a bf to str8 nightclub and start snogging, would anyone care? Personally I've done it, people don't care, but it doesn't stop people being scared something might. Apart from that, I don't think it makes a difference. In a couple of years time (I think), new legislation comes into force which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexuality. Honestly I think homophobia will fall out of fashion and people will eventually accept that it happens. Thats probably a very round about way of answering your question. Oh and finally, don't feel pressured into coming out to anyone - it's your life and you tell people when your ready.

it's already illegal to discriminate against gay couples, bed and breakfasts etc.

To your question it will probabley make your life harder as there are still many who are if not against homosexuality at the very lest treat homosexuals as comic figures. Yet the alternative is not being your true self which could have a deeper pyschological impact on you. Therefore realistically you must decide which will have a worst effect on you. 50 years ago hiding it may have been the rational thing to do, these days that is unlikely to be the case.

However it isn't yet illegal for a GP not to accept you because of your gender, or for an employer to fire you because of it. Silly that is isn't already on the books but it will be soon.

it doesn't make a difference to day-to-day life. Your sexuality isn't the epicentre of everything you do!

But it does make a difference overall, of course. There are lots of hurdles to overcome etc.

It has been illegal for a company to fire you based on gender for years. In fact it is illegal to fire you on lots of grounds, so they just fabricate one to fit their bigotory.

damn maybe I can't read - well in that case it's no problem whatsoever being gay really - just ignore the idiots.

It could well be argued your sexuality is entirely irrelevant for the vast majority, if not all jobs you wish to enter for - so you don't even have to speak about it.
