Im doing a combined social sciences degree where you can do any 4 of criminology, sociology, psychology of education, social policy, anthropology, social psychology and education of society in the first year. You also have to do a key ideas module and a research module. Basically it amounts to 6 lectures a week and then 6 seminars over a fortnight (normally three a week). There are two examination periods - january and june - and you only really essays to write otherwise, no little tests. im really enjoying the course at the mo. hope that helps!

Hey KerryAllen,

Thanks thats really helpful, it sounds like a good course. Could you give me any info on what you do in the seminars? Are there alot of presentations, discussions, debates? and if there are do these count towards your mark?

I was also wondering how have you found the accomodation, is alot of it close together or is it quite spread out? Is it quite sociable? As where i have been staying wasnt sociable atall, it was really quiet and i wanted to be somewhere lively! and is the nightlife good?lol

Thanks for the info vickix

the seminars are basically just an opportunity to discuss the lectures and go into more detail on confusing parts. they are also used to ask questions about coursework and exams. You dont do anything in them such as debates or duscussions that count towards your degree in the first year but dont know about the other years. The only marked things in first year are on essay and one exam per module - some in january and some in june. so the work all seems to come at once - so for a little bit u are very busy but its definately not tests etc all the time.
Im staying at talybont which consists of talybont north, talybont south and talybont court, and amounts to over 3000 students. There is a social area in the middle and shop sports hall etc on site which ive found does make it a sociable place to live. Ive also heard that sengenned hall and court are close together and very sociable and uni hall isnt too bad but quite a way away from uni and town. The others are all dotted around and smaller but dont really know about them im afraid.
The nightlife is quite good - theres quite a variety of clubs and bars etc in town which all hold student nights where drink and entry is very cheap. I heard cardiff is the city where u can have the cheapest night out and it is very fun. When out u can mix with lots of people from cardiff uni aswell as UWIC. The student union club is also good - each night od week has different theme and music etc, but it can get very overcrowded.
