You can get permits on a semester basis at some of the halls in Fallowfield. I forget which, and how much it is, but it is possible and some do.

what about people who live in private housing in Fallowfield, do a lot of people take their cars with them?
Reply 3
Most people I know don't bother and if you're thinking of driving to university forget it unless you have more money than sense.

Private housing you can park in the street but have you seen the parking situation in Fallowfield? You will be very lucky to be able to park near your house.

Private halls tend to charge an awful lot of money for cars.

No I haven't been to Fallowfield so I haven't seen the parking situation. Is the problm caused by loads of students bringing their cars or is it caused by the local residents taking up all the space?
Just a problem because most of the houses are on "Coronation Street" type roads - very narrow and lined with cars, so it's always difficult to park! One of my boyfriend's mates has a car, but they live in Levenshulme, bit further out and possibly not so busy. However, if you take a car you should find room for it, but also be warned it's likely it may be vandalised!

thanks hannah, so do many students who live in fallowfield take their cars?

I would say most don't but enough to do to cause parking problems. I think you need to ask why you want to take your car. Driving to university is not going to happen walking or getting the bus is the best way.

Manchester is not the most car friendly city, I mean would you take your car to central London if you were a student there?
Yep I agree with AT82, a car is useful in Manchester if you live slightly out of the main student areas. (much fewer buses and a lot less regularly) However, living in Fallowfield, there are buses about every 30 seconds to uni. Oxford Road is crazy traffic, and it will be a miracle if you find somewhere to park in time for a 9am lecture! Manchester city centre is just mad too, I'm far too scared to drive there, lol!

I drive to uni.......i park in a car park on a council estate in somewhere called plymouth grove and takes me ten minutes to walk from there to uni. Its easier for me cos i live in chorlton. I cud get a bus easy enough tho.

Me personally if i lived in fallowfield would not bother with a car. the buses are so regular into town and cost about 50p i think.
I dont know of any students in fallowfield who have brought their car.
If u have an alarm and immobiliser then u may aswel. But your insurance will go sky high too. mine went from £126 to £600 thats was with 5 years no claims 2. My car is parked in a locked car park with cctv cos its student halls but the scallys still managed to break in.

--------------

The reason I have my car here is cos i on placement in the hospital and start at 7am....no way am i gettin a bus that time of the mornin in this freezin weather. Also I could not do my food shoppin without it. That just shows how lazy I am. Its also really convinient to get to trafford centre ........but many buses do go to trafford centre so i am just lazy.

You can get the 23 to the trafford centre though. There are not many 86's before 7:00 though so I see your problem there. I went to Salford and had to get the 86/46/84 to town then get a bus into Salford from there.

Wythenshawe is a pig to get to by bus from Chorlton ever since the 84 stopped running there. I doubt we will ever get the Metrolink.

However Cheadle has a direct bus link to Wythenshawe and it gets a lot of trouble there at night because of it.

Don't get me wrong there are a lot of decent people who live there, there is just a lot of chavs as well and they really do cause a lot of trouble. I bet you have seen your fair share of it working at that hospital.

The 84 runs after 6pm and its great .....why they stopped it during the day I dont know.
The metro link would be great but its expensive. My friend comes from Altrincham into Uni and costs £4.80.
I wouldnt exactly call them chavs but know what you mean. Wythenshawe is a fantastic teaching hospital but when dying patients have jewellry robbed from their fingers and patientline TV's which cost 2 grand get smashed up Nurses and Doctors get spat at Punched at and swore at suppose you get it in every big city tho.

As a few people have said, fallowfield probably isn't the best bet for a car. Are you a Master's student (so self funded) or on a funded PhD? If the latter maybe look for somewhere furtherafield like a houseshare in west didsbury/chorlton/withington. Anywhere South Manchester in fact  Even then, you'd probably want to take buses into Uni in the mornings (take the 85 here).
Should I take my car down? Hoping to get a place at Hulme Hall.
Well they won't let you park your car at hulme hall, car park spaces are for functions/meeting or whatever they are, why the hell would you need a car there anyway? I WALK from hulme hall to umist every day before its 9am, and if your lazy a £2 weekly bus pass is cheap enough
Reply 19
Not true (unless it's changed drastically in the past year).

If you live at Hulme Hall you can park your car there. Students get a pass and there are designated car parks for the different blocks. Conferences and the like tend to happen out of Uni terms and aren't a big problem.

At the worst (in years where there are hundreds of car drivers) there's plenty of (free, all hours) road space nearby.
