Having a mole removed from your face

Hey everyone,

I've just been to see the plastic surgeon at the hospital and I've arranged an appointment to have a mole removed from my face. It's beside my nose, it's a little bit raised but it seems to be spreading upwards. It's about 2mm in diameter. I seem to be being offered the removal on the NHS, which is odd, although as it seems to be getting bigger I guess they don't mind removing it. The doctor was a bit... unorthodox but he seems like a nice bloke. I was wondering if anyone's had this kind of thing done before? My operation is 10 days before I go back to school but I go back the day after the stitches are taken out so I'm a bit worried about what it might look like. Any similar experiences?

Thanks for reading

Depending on how deep it goes it might leave a scar for a while. I had one removed from my neck and apparently it was very deep and I had a scar there for literally more than two years, but that seems rare because other people I know who've had small ones removed had no scar or very little scar left a few days after the stitches were removed. It sounds small so I doubt it will be hideous in any way.

Haven't had a mole removed personally but my cousin did last year. It was on his back and about 1cm diameter. You can't even tell that he had a mole now.

This may sound stupid, but, why do you have them removed?

Well I don't like this one because of it's cosmetic aspect as well, but the main reason is that it seems to be growing and the doctor said that if I wait until it's grown bigger, and then want it removed, it'll obviously leave a bigger scar. Also who wants an ever enlarging mole on their face?

1) they look crap
2) they can be dangerous (go malignant)

Especially if you're a bloke and it's in your shaving area. If you nick them they can go wonky.

Ahh...I'm enlightened! I just wondered cuz I was told I could have a lump on my head removed but I had to wait until I was 16, which was last March.

I was thinking about that the other day, I've got a small one on my neck and after shaving it seems to have lost it's 'bump' and is now hardly noticable - I read that if they change shape or start bleeding it's usually a bad thing so am wondering whether I should get it removed as I don't know much about this whole malignancy being connected to moles thing.

Better safe than sorry I say. Get it checked out by a doc.
I had a mole removed from my face in the summer - however, I had it done privately (£300 at Transform clinic) and all they did was slice it off my face (it was protruding), put a plaster on it and send me on my merry way. Took a week to heal and then I was left with a red mark, which is gradually fading and now isn't even noticeable. If you can avoid stitches then do so. Otherwise, well done on getting it on the NHS!

They are quite common on the nose because that is the spot that gets burnt the most in the summer (UV light ---> DNA damage ---> localised cells growing abnormally ---> mole).
I had a mole removed from my face and it did leave a scar buts its not that noticable. I didnt have any stiches though. I had a local anesthetic which is prob the worse bit (having a big needle being injected into ur face) but none of it hurt. U dont need to worry

Speak to the surgeon operating regarding scarring etc I presume these are slick people and wont cause many complications but definitly ask the person doing it, Its such a common question anyway  !

How did you have it removed then? With no stitches?

I can't have mine shaved off because it doesn't protrude much, just a little bit, it's just that the pigment is spreading across the skin.

Also it's not ON my nose, it's on the skin just beside it

Mine wasnt on my nose either. Im not sure why i didnt have stiches but i just had it cut off (it was a raised mole) and they used some sort of thing to burn it off too. I cant really remember the details coz it was when i was little.
Hi guys I know I'm a newbie but I feel I can comment on this thread seeing that I have recently had a mole removed from my fallice, unfortunatley the area around the incision has gone sceptic. Any advice?

What is a fallice? Whatever it is, you should see your doc.

Anyway, I just wanted to ask the OP how s/he managed to get it done on the NHS? I've got a mole on my neck that I'm thinking of getting removed. I've read that BUPA can do it for about £200, so I've saved up enough to get it done like that, but obviously I'd rather just get it done for free if possible.

Well I will get it done on the NHS I guess because there was the possibility of it enlarging and going a bit manky. The surgeon said it wasn't a health risk as such - it wouldn't turn into cancer, but obviously the cosmetic implications are not good. I don't really know but both my GP and the surgeon were very enthusiastic and neither of them mentioned going private. Also I got the appointment for April 2006, so that's amazingly quick on the NHS.

I suggest you see your doctor, if the mole is raised it might be catching on your clothing or if you just dislike the appearance of it then say so. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
