Rugby at LSE

Since basketball got its own thread I reasoned that a proper sport should get one too

So how do field sports like rugby and football work at the UoL? I've read there are grounds in New Malden, but can anyone tell me how long it takes to get there, how often is training viable etc. Also, what's the quality like and who do you play against? Any responses would be graciously received!

Lol
LSE have their own teams.

I don't know too much about the specifics of it over there, I know at UCL it's about an hour coach or so to Shenly each way. Return ticket is £4 and training there is weekly. There's an indoor sports facility much closer which is used for some things - but obviously can't be used for others.

I also know UCL beat LSE 97-0 when we last played them at rugby :toofunny:

Lol, that's because I wasn't playing  (I haven't even heard from LSE yet :frown: or UCL for that matter...)

Are you in the UCL rugby team?

It's a pity you don't do as well academically :toofunny:
You'll be well catered for with Rugby at LSE, there are three men's teams and a women's team. i know nothing about rugby but the men's teams are supposedly not that great at it.... but who cares? they like a drink and a laugh and that's the main thing. women's rugby is really popular as well, they have about 30+ members, always a bit of rivalry between them and the LSE netball girls over who is the hotter etc...

as for football you couldn't go to a better uni in London for it. There are seven teams, all of which are some of the most successful at their level. the first team are near professional standard, they won the ULU Cup 2 seasons ago and play in BUSA and consistently do well in ULU Premier 1. the third team have won 2 successive promotions. Even at the bottom end of the spectrum the LSE seventh team are reknowned around campus for being pretty good - they play at the same level as other unis second and first teams so that shows you how high the quality is.

the football teams play at Fortress Berrylands, the LSE's sportsground in south london. away games are at the various university sportsgrounds around London - Imperial are based out near heathrow (bit of a trek that one), UCL at Shenley, where they share with Watford FC, and GKT medical school share with Chelsea at Cobham. You'll also have the pleasure of visiting such delightful haunts as Perivale (School of Pharmacy), Peckham (some GKT teams) and sometimes have to trek all the way out to Reading to play Holloway Women's Prison.

be warned though, the competition is for places on LSE football teams is tough - last year there were around 100 people who went to trials and didn't get on any team at all.

4 teams out of 7000 people isn't a huge number in fairness...

who is the hotter

Netball. Easily

On football, all the London teams are pretty decent

Compared to the rest of the UK, London unis are a bit dicey when it comes to sport...

Dammit !! I love football soooooo much but I suck so bad as well... . Do they train you before trials, just the time my hidden talent wakes up.... ? Anyway, I ll be in buenos aires this summer, maybe I should get in a football "academy" or something. And if I make a fool of myself, no one will know know about that.

In a purely numerical sense then yes. But I know that the LSE rugby club hasn't had to turn away hundreds of people at trials every year. I'd say the majority of LSE students that want to play rugby get to play for the LSERUFC at some point - unlike football where there are a good few hundred people who'd like to get in, but can't.

Presumably you've never played football against School of Pharmacy, Imperial Medics or St George's Medical School then.
