Reputation Thing

I don't know where else to ask this question, so yes, I know I've posted it in the wrong forum!
Anyway, If i click on my userCP I notice that someone has put a reputation thing for something i remember writing by accident which was quite embarresing, and there is 58 points (what ever that is!!!!). What is this reputation thing to do with?

Well people give positive or negative reputation points to you. If you write something helpful, or something funny people will give you positive rep and if you annoy or insult people they will give you negative rep.

And the points you get depends on the other users status (his rep power, due to number of posts etc.)
