clubs and societies at uni

I know being a med student means you have to work vvvv hard and spend alot of time in lectures/practicals/tutorials etc. so what sort of clubs and societies have you med students joined whilst at uni? I'd really like to join an orchestra when (if!) I get to med school, but i'm worried I won't have enough time because it would probs mean a 2/3 hour rehearsal once a week in the evening.

are there any current med student who could give me a bit of advice (espesh. if you have joined an orchestra)

thanks!

there's plenty of time! i'm doing my BSc year and am still managing to do volunteer work, writing, and having a few socs on the go too

As long as you manage your time there's no problems whatsoever and don't let anyone tell you that medics have to work 24-7.

There's lots of time to take part in clubs/socs. True, during the later clinical years u may not have as much time as before, but u should always try and make the time. If not, u'd prob go crazy lol :p:!

There's eaaasily enough time to join societies at least before you start clinicals. At Notts we have about 20 hours contact time and I prob do about 4 hours extra a week. I'm quite lazy though, some people need to do a lot more, and some people do absolutely no extra work - it depends how you learn really. I play medics tennis which takes up a few hours a week, and I also swim and play volleyball at least once a week. So seriously don't worry about time management in the first few weeks, and its really important to get involved as much as possible. Theres nothing worse than a boring medical student who just works alllllll day long!

Plenty. OK, so I'm a first year and I maybe havnt yet done as much hardcore work as I should have dine but I still find plently of time for:
1. Coxing the men's first VIII (rowing) so thats 4 early mornings a week (up at 5.15) before lectures and on saturday mornings plus races.
2. Womens rugby. 2 practices a week plus matches when I can do them.
3. string orchestra - 2hr practice
4. Marrow counselling thing - one evening a week. about 2 or 3 hours.
5. going to the gym
6. going out most nights a week.

you cant be boring... or no-one will give you a job at the ned of your degree!
Youll be fine...only reason i aint done more is cus our halls r so damn far from the union, its so much effort to walk for 45 mins to get home, then 45 mins back, and i dont fancy it in the dark! i do do medics netball, which is specially for medics as its just a laugh, but we play against other unis. Bristol is good like that as they have their own orchestra/choir and sports teams.

A lot of med schools have medic-only clubs and socs, because obviously medics are the best :p:. In seriousness tho, having medics clubs and socs means they're more flexible to fit in with studies .

It means that matches aren't on a wed afternoon - as once you start clinicals you don't get the luxury of wed pm off! And its really good to meet medics in other years.

The med school actively promotes it - if a consultant puts on to many Weds PM things, the Deans get involved!

From what I hear about it they're on the whole quite cool about the whole thing. Memo's go from the med school to the firms each term, reminding them that Weds PMs are protected, etc... Quite a few students who don't do sports or paid work usually ask for extra teaching etc and get it. Seems to work quite well. A lot of our consultants are involved in sports teams etc.
Maybe I'm wrong then - here's hoping anyway!

Sounds good! I always felt kinda guility last year wheneva the consultant said we should come in on Weds afternoons. Altho sumtimes it can't be helped - some things only happened on a Weds such as specific theatre lists, interventions etc heehee!

That's what actually happens.. "sorry, I can't do blah blah blah tomorrow as I'm playing rugby"... consultants can only rant and rave "in my day etc etc" but the reasonable ones are OK with it, only the evil ones will insist..
Our netball team trains wednesday afternoons, so im not sure wether we get it off in clinicals...but i think the whole team is pre clinical
