Haha... This is more like it.
Well..... I always thought hip hop was the culture made up of the four elements: -
* Rap
* The B-Boy
* Graffiti
* Deejaying
Although some consider Beatboxing to be the Fifth Element.

Now there is two main types of rap music; Hip Hop and Hip Pop which are pretty self explanatory.

Btw at the moment i am digging Non Phixion, Monster Island Szars and Kurious.

Might wanna add djsource.co.uk and djforums.com for all those deejays out there. For the b-boys b-boys.com (i think will need to check) is pretty good. And i will dig out a trainer website when i remember it i think called sneakerfreaks.

Anyway, whilse I'm here I'd like to let you know that there is a difference between Rap and HipHop. An example of Rap is 50 Cent, Nelly, Chingy, Snoop, etc. An example of HipHop is Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common Sense, Wu-Tang, Chino XL, Dead Prez, Big L, etc. Of course theres a mix sometimes... eg: JayZ, Nas, Jadakiss. I think thats just about acceptable.

Err... I was under the impression that hip hop is the entire culture, including, as you said, graf, b-boying, turntablism... and rap/hip hop music. Sorry to be a pedant but people deciding that rap and hip hop are somehow different genres is a pet peeve
Annnd Nas just about acceptable? Have you heard Illmatic?
Anyways.. I better stop ranting :biggrin: (*and edit --> smudge beat me to it)

....
Name: Liera

Favourite Artist: Hard to pick... but I'll go for Common. Or Talib... or GZA..
Favourite Album: I'll go for someone who isn't in the favourite artists list and put El-P - Fantastic Damage
KRS-ONE said it best, to be honest: "Hip Hop is a way of life". Most of the emcees we listed take HipHop seriously - for the love of the culture and the art involved. Rap = Hip Pop basically. Anyway, are you signing up? By the way, Non Phixion are dope.

Of course, one of my fav albums. But you can't deny that he has become more commercial recently with Streets Disciple. Thief's Theme, Just A Moment, Virgo, etc. Nas is in my top 5 of all time. I just included Nas in that list because they're dope, but also have a quite strong commercial appeal.

Def Jux ftw :biggrin: I wanna get Cannibal Ox's stuff as i really enjoyed a mixtape with them on.

Edited: for stupid mistake

^ Cannibal Ox is Vast Aire and Vordul... and yeah their album Cold Vein is amazing. Shame Vast's solo stuff is less good... but there's a new Can-O album coming out next year apparently *excited*

And I should let this lie but..
Rap = Hip Pop basically

No no no.. rap/hip hop music is part of hip hop culture. Tis not a seperate genre (although 50 Cent et al should be binned somewhere away from decent rap :smile:)

It is a sub-genre at the very least. But nice choices, by the way. Cold Vein is an amazing album...

I know what you mean about Rap being a part of Hip-Hop and i was slightly dubious about entering it, however, hip-hop is at a point where separation is essential. Rap was never mainstream before like it is now, the mainstream is tainting the image for the rest of the artists and to distinguish between them, a split of genre needs to occur.

I get you, but since just "hip hop" ie decent rap can be the likes of Talib Kweli, or it can be Def Jux stuff, or it could be Necro/Goretex etc.. all of which sound very different from each other - its only grouped together because its not mainstream. While Jadakiss, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and so on might make music which is more mainstream, and by your logic deserves to go into the "rap" group, but it doesn't mean that all of their stuff taints the genre - plenty of it is worth listening to. We already have indie hip hop, conscious rap, horrorcore and other various sub groupings - the rap/hip hop split doesnt really work for me.

And yes I'm a girl :smile: woohoo

I prefer the many sub groupings as its easier to find stuff you want and some are quite amusing such as nerd or sci fi rap.
You're the second girl I know (kinda, anyway) that knows anything about HipHop apart from the mainstream rappers... Thats a compliment. :tongue:

One must remember the classic rapper the "fathers" of rap 2pac, Notorious BIG, Nas etc I prefer these than to the crap today..Candy Shop wtf (for example) I think Afro Man pretty much sums up rap today in his song "Whack Rappers" listen and enjoy because its all true

imo the father of hip hop would be dj kool herc as he kind of invented the genre

I bought an Special Herbs and Spices Vol 1 by MF Doom & MF Grimm and The Further Adventures of Lord Quas by Quasimoto just after christmas, as an attempt to broarden my musical taste. I love them both even though I've only ever listen to about 10 rap albums in my life. Anyway, anyone got and reccommendations of stuff like that I might like.
^get Viktor Vaughn-Vaudeville Villian... good beats by Madlib and good lyrics by MF Doom
