Famous people doesn't equal useful to their country...lots of famous people though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Oxford_University_people for Oxford and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alumni_of_cambridge_university for Cambridge. Tony Bliar erm Blair (oh I know I'm so witty...) went to St John's College, Oxford - that's one example...

--------------

Plus that's a really poor poll...
Well the list is endless.. a good source of information is:

http://www.push.co.uk/pushguide/universities.jsp and then click on Oxford/Cambridge/the individual colleges.

Alternatively, Wikipedia is always good:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Oxford and any links which are on this page.

EDIT: And Fatboy has already given you Wikipedia.. great minds hehe!

I love the way that Push site says "The following Push entries expose the naked truth and the neatly garbed falsehoods " and yet it claims that Cambridge was founded in 1284 [it was actually founded in 1209!!]. Idiots...

And says that all students can live in college at Jesus College, Oxford but in fact only 1st years can - rest live in college accomadation on other sites...
Yes I'd question a lot of it.. but for the purposes of looking at "famous" people or people who became "useful" to their country (Fatboy - love the Bliar example!) it has some use. Ok I better go now.

There's a mistake on Wikipedia's List. For the scientist Florey it says Magdalen in brackets, yet he never had anything to do with Magdalen!!! He was a Rhodes Scholar at Queen's and then went onto Lincoln...no idea where they got Magdalen from!!!

Change it...it's open source...or show me a source for that and I'll change it on my account...

Al Murray went to my college, and I think he's incredibly funny.

Billions of politicians as well. In fact, every Prime Minister in the UK since 1938 either went to Oxford, or not to university at all. Must be something in the water...

More British PMs went to ChCh college than the whole of Cambridge university...there's a fact for you...

Well if you go to the page dedicated to him it has all that information, it's just that list that's wrong!

But then if you look at Lincoln's page of information on him it does say Magdalen, so I don't know any more!
http://www.lincoln.ox.ac.uk/famous/florey/
They mention Magdalen and the Rhodes Scholarship but don't mention Queen's!

Arghh it's too confusing!

Probably best to leave it then...was he one of the guys who found out about DNA?
And which undergrad students at Oxbridge have a claim to fame now?

Well, according to Wiki, 13 Prime Ministers went to Christ Church, and 15 went to Cambridge (Oxford had 25 overall). So at least get your facts right if you're going to continue to annoy me with your inaccurate 'Oxford is better' rubbish. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_notable_Oxford_students and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_University_of_Cambridge_people for proof

Trinity College Cambridge people have won 31 Nobel Prizes - the whole of Oxford only has 47 and Cambridge have 81 in total

Isn't it true that that's more than the whole of France?!

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_Church,_Oxford Cambridge produced 11 PMs, ChCh college 13...sorry clearly the writer of the article was wrong...

In all seriousness, how can you say either Oxford or Cambridge are "better"? Both are amazing universities with some great alumni...

To President Ben...erm Stephen Fry, Tony Blair, Rowan Williams etc. etc. ...so that's comedy, politics and clergy...

--------------

To quote:
Christ Church, Oxford article in Wikipedia
Traditionally it has been seen as the most aristocratic college. It has produced 13 British prime ministers (the most recent being Sir Alec Douglas-Home in 1963–1964), which is more than any other Oxford or Cambridge college (and more than the total number for Cambridge University, at 11). However today the proportion of undergraduates from maintained and independent schools is roughly equal, which is typical of most Oxford colleges.

Seriously arguing that a uni is better than another on the basis of their alumni is pretty stupid IMO. Obviously the unis have moved on- Oxford isn't the same now as it was in the 1940s when Thatcher was there, or the 1970s when Blair was there.

Having said that, there was an interesting article in the Times a long while ago by Rees-Mogg, which argued that both are fantastic, but Cambridge is better for the Natural Sciences (and so has more things like Nobel Prizes, because there are more available for scientists) whilst Oxford is an arts place, and politics is essentially an art, so Oxford alumni do better.

Either way, there's something about the place that encourages would-be politicians, because the raw figures are astonishing. I can't wait to find out...

Whoa, Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen) went to Christ's, Cambridge?! No way!

Edit: It's amazing how many times 'Trinity' appears on the Cambridge list
