Should I finish my degree?

Ok what do you lot think.

Im 27 and have a degree and loads of debt. i worked for a couple of years and decided I wanna be a Speech Therapist so I went back to uni to do another undergraduate degree in Speech and language Therapy. i really enjoyed the first year, did really well but ran out of money, got in more debt so had to take a year out. I moved in with my boyfriend got a job (which I hate) and am saving to pay off my debt. Im hoping to go back to uni in September but I just cant decide if i really should. Ill be 29 when I graduate and it means my boyfriend and i will have to spend the next 2 yrs in a long distance relationship again which I dont wanna do. It also means of course that ill be skint for 2 years more (3 included this one.) Everyone thinks its time I settled down and I agree but I really hate my job and I really wanna be a speech therapist. I worry im too old too. I dont wanna get to old to have kids....

Being 29 is nothing - there are people n my degree in the first year who are 49! As someone who has just started her 2nd degree I would encourage you to go for it if you wnat to be a speech therapist that badly...........I wans't looking forward to the idea of going back to uni after my first degree but now I'm there its definitely the ebst move I've made............it has meant my boyfriend and I have had to put house and marriage plans on hold as we can't afford to move out on one set of wages but he understands that I have to do this and is extremely supportive...............................

My mom had me at 32; my dad was 35.

Finish your degree, or else you will regret it. Imagine working that painful job for the rest of your life!

2 years of doing a degree or 40 years of regret? You would be stupid to drop out now there was lots of people your age on my course so don't worry about it, you're not old.

I'll be 25k in debt by the time I've finished my degree, but I don't let it worry me - I just figure that sometimes you just have to take a risk and yes its alot of debt, but its going to lead me to be able to do what I've always wanted, and I'll earn enough to pay it back so it doesn't really matter

My dad is paying for my undergraduate, but I'm on my own for law school...and I will be $150,000 in debt by the time I finish. lol

So yes, definitely continue the degree, because compared to me at least you'll be like Bill Gates. 25K isn't too much debt...
Sorry to Hijack this thread
Slypie, how will you be $150,000 in debt by the time you finish. That seems like a lot of money to be in debt by for doing a Law degree and such. my eyes jus nearly popped out of my head.

Well in America a law degree is completed after you finish a bachelors. which takes 4 years. So my undergraduate education costs $80,000 but luckily I don't have to cover that. Law school costs $50,000 a year and the best ones usually require full-time study, which means I can't work while I attend law school. It takes 3 years to complete a Juris Doctorate, and then I have to pass the bar exam for the state I want to practice in, which hopefully won't take too long.

Thus I will be $150,000 in debt because I'm paying for graduate school on my own. It's unfortunate that in America there are NOT that many scholarships for medical and law school students; PhD students get the scholarships, so I should not get my hopes up for that.

So I will probably be getting financial aid and most of it will be student loans which are usually paid on interest for a period of ten years or so.
Oh my...

Do you not get an NHS bursary for SALT?

Also how come you're doing the full course? Have you thought about trying to transfer to/start from scratch the masters?

You are not too old - I have a few friends doing SALT and they're already much older than you are. May be you chose the right course, but the wrong place. Don't stay in a job you hate for a bloke... You'll end up hating him for it.

I know how you feel - I expect to owe £60k by the time I graduate from medical school...

Thank you everybody for your replies. You have confirmed for me that I am making the right decision at least!!! I'll stop questioning now whether i'll go back and start properly saving!

Fluffy yes i do get a bursary but its not enough and Im doing the whole course cause I didnt get onto the masters programme. Ive also tried transferring to a different uni but with no success.

I want to do SALT & I'v been talking to my Mum about your post. She's 46 and she regrets not working towards a career when she was younger. She says don't give up- you are too young to get stuck in a job you hate and you will always look back and wonder if you could have done it.
Glad to hear you're not giving-up I've been doing a mind-numbing job in a shop for three years now and believe me it just gets worse. Plus if you are going to get into debt you may as well have something to show for it and my Mum had me at 37 when my Dad was 36 and I'm okay.
