Becomming a medical receptionist!

Am currently looking for a medical receptionist position for this year, starting mid Jan. Have been a receptionist before, but it wasn't for a clinic! More for a pool/sports institution lol. Anyway can anyone tell me what it's like/what to expect if you have been/are a medical receptionist, and if the pay is good (don't have to be specific  ), what your experiences were etc.

Thanks in advance,

much love,

my mum works as a medical receptionist type thing. i know she finds it hectic, its always busy there and you will probably need some knowledge of medical things. she was a nurse before she got the job as a medical receptionist and also has secretarial background which i htink helps!

seriously, i think it helps to know medical terms etc.

as for pay, i dont know how much she earns, but i know it isnt a huuge amount.
Pay around where I live is £6 an hour (erratic hours though to fit in with the surgery, like 8am-11am then 5pm-7pm). I know you don't specifically need medical experience because really that side of it is irrelevant, you're just answering the phones, pulling medical records and taking requests for repeat prescriptions etc.
My sister did it in a bad area of Manchester, enjoyed it but you get some unusual people....

Does anyone know where these vacnacies are advertised? I can't seem to find any on NHS recruitment websites? is there a separate one for GP surgery staff??
I've always seen them in the job centre or the local paper - as they don't require any medical training as such I can't imagine GP surgeries bothering to go to the trouble of putting them on an NHS site.

That's exactly how I found the vacancies I applied for :p:
Yep, that's right, also ta for the info earlier, and you'll find I repped you for that  well deserved IMO

Have got back two replies, one place I'm more keen on than the other (ie. from friends I've heard the pay is good and we'd be working with top specialists = looks better on CV to boot). Interviews next week, I'm nervous as! Hopefully I'll get the job hay lol,
