Don't bother with them. They may put you to sleep but you won't get a natural sleep cycle. You may wake up feeling even worse.

I presume you're talking about something like Nytol or a similar over the counter sleeping pill: they're mildly effective if you aren't used to them; they generally make you feel quite relaxed and your body a little heavier. Doubling the dose won't be particularly efficacious. Although if it's a prescription sleeping pill like temazepam I certainly wouldn't recommend doubling (though given that you say they're 50mg tablets I doubt it is). If you take too many you'll just feel very heavy and groggy, a little like being drunk.
if your talking about proper prescribed pill s for the love of god dont take two...yo'll feel sick as a dog, wont be able to walk straight and have a dirty chemical hangover..take it from someone who took two once...i have no idea about nytol stuff....im sure if youll find yourself snoozing anyway so i wouldnt worry...just follow packet instructions

How effective are these things? I have some of the 50mg ones, I plan to take them on my long haul flight to NZ next week

If they don't work too well can I double the dose quite safely?

How good are what???
