Appealing EMA result

I did creative writing last year (level two) and Advanced Creative Writing (level three) this year, and just was awarded a diploma. Last year I got a level two pass (overall).

This year, I did six TMA's. Scores: 75; 82; 63; 81; 78 (one was 'formative). The last score, i.e. 78 was based on the first 1000 words of the EMA (a prose fiction story), which the tutor thought was good.

My EMA result came back: 61.

Of course, the EMA is 50% of the mark, so I've been given a level three pass ... at level three. It's important as I'm doing a psychology degree and was told I can count one of these courses towards it. A level two at level three (if you see what I mean) would really help towards a 2:1.

I don't see how that can happen. The lowest result of all the assignments. OK, so it's an EMA, perhaps the standards are higher ... but even so, if the first 1000 words are 78. I posted the whole thing to the forums, (4000 words), rewrote it. OK, I'm no Oscar Wilde, but that would make it the lowest mark I've ever received at the OU, on something I was essentially happy with. Ugh!

What do you think? Should I say something. I've looked into it. As far as I can work out, the first thing you do is contact your tutor, but the site is closed now.

I mean, probably everyone who gets a low mark feels it's unfair, and I don't want to be just one more loser complaining ...

... 61? Oh, come on?

Say something?

It's clearly racism

OK, I've gone through all the available info at the results page. It says concerning appeals:

Your own assessment of your performance or achieving a lower score for the examinable component than the overall continuous assessment does not provide evidence in support for a query or appeal.

So basically ... I accept it. Yeah?

Well, I'm doing my first psychology level three at the moment, maybe I'll be OK...

... perhaps with a 2:2 I could do a masters too, and that'll make it all better.

The diploma doesn't actually show the classification on the front like a degree (I checked before enrolling!), so it's still good for framing.

Man, that sucks though. Do you think that sucks?

2:2 isn't so bad, if it came to that. I mean, is that a higher level of education than the UK average? It must be, plus it's in a named subject. Plus I've a diploma now.

I might be able to do another level three at the end, if it was a close call. Choose a subject with a good chance of doing well.

I'd say something. If your first 1000 words were 78, then to get 61 overall, the last three quarters needed to be 55. Seems a little bit odd considering your other grades and your early feedback. The other option is you didn't answer all the questions or something? That'd line up with giving just 10% for the last quarter, not accounting for any presentation marks.

I'd be cheeky and use the details in my tutor welcome email to ask them to look it over and see why the last part got such a low mark compared to the rest.

Yeah. It wasn't questions though, it was a 4000 word fiction story.

OK, that's a good approach. I'll informally contact my tutor, in a chatty kind of way, 'no big deal' kind of way. He was nice enough. If there's absolutely no leeway (as the guidance seems to suggest) he'll just reiterate that.

Yes. I'll do that. Thanks.

Did you end it '...and then he woke up and it was all a dream?'

Id love to do creative writing, but the type of horror books i read and therefore prob write about would end up getting me kicked off the course, lol

No, and it didn't start on a dark and stormy night either.

I've contacted my tutor. Don't know if I'll hear from him.

I presume there's a brief of sorts that outlines what you have to do, against which your EMA has been marked? The best thing to do would be go through that and state where you believe you have satisfied the criteria but not received marks. Saying "I think I should have got more because the first part scored higher" won't be enough. Your first part could have fulfilled the marking criteria significantly better than the remaining 3,000 words. You need to make a case for why your score should be higher.

The procedure is outlined below along with the relevant OU link.

I'm in a similar position on my current course.

There are two stages when appealing against the score awarded to your assignment.

Stage 1

Contact your tutor to query your mark, within 28 days of the assignment being returned to you or being made available for collection from the eTMA system.

You must make a query about the score of the final TMA for the module within 14 days.

The relevant date is either that shown on your PT3 form or the date the assignment was available for collection, regardless of when you retrieved the assignment.

In writing, either by email or letter, ask your tutor to reconsider the mark they have awarded. Once they have responded you should admit this as evidence that you have completed this stage of the procedure. You cannot submit a formal TMA appeal until you have received your tutor's response.

Stage 2

To formally appeal against the score awarded to your assignment, complete our assignment scores / TMA appeals web form within 28 days of your tutor responding to your query, or within 14 days if it is the final TMA of the module. Provide details of why you are appealing your score and attach evidence that you have completed the first stage of the procedure. If your assignment was originally submitted by paper copy, post the original assignment to the Complaints and Appeals Office for use in your appeal.

When we receive your appeal the assignment will be re-marked by an independent marker, which normally takes about 20 working days. The decision of the second marker is final.

Please note that when an assignment is re-marked the score may go down as well as up.

Because appeals of this nature are matters of academic judgement, there is no further course of appeal available following the outcome of the second marking.

That's a massive difference! That's why I want to leave the OU
