My friends at Merton do tend to get worked a little harder (and are under a tad more pressure) than people at my college - but that could just as well stem from my college being a slackers' college  . You'll have to work hard wherever you go, but there'll be plenty of time to play as well.

I've heard a lot that Merton is a very academic college, "Mertonians only come out of their rooms for dinner" and so on, and it does tend to do well in the Norrington table, but when I was there I didn't get the impression that all people do is work. People in the JCR were generally really friendly and there were a fair amount of eccentrics around. It's a great place, lovely buildings, plus it's got a free pool table which I like. I'd say people do generally work hard there but that's fairly expected at Oxford anyway, so don't be put off by any college stereotypes and just have a look around a few colleges if you're thinking of applying. :fisheye:

explains why they just won the top division this year.. i mean.. 5/6 of the team play varsity pool, tis just not fair! well we only lost 6-3.. n i won my doubles... but come on! pool is defo the sport of merton!!

i've got 2 mates at merton and yes, it's very academic, top 2 of norringtons every year, and they do work lots, but it's always about a balance of work and play - just mertonians have a little more work to balance than the rest of us

The JCR is ususally empty in term time (except when tipsy and deciding to take pool 'table' photos). I've spent a few weekends there, seems they get a bit more work, but just means they stay up a few extra hours than everyone else. The people i've met currently at merton are good banter aswell.

lol! there r 5 merton teams. what i can't understand is that merton 5th team got promoted from division 4 but merton 3rds got relegated from dev 3 to dev 4... makes no sense.. needs a lil more balance! don't worry, exeter will be back! we've won it more times than anyone else! and there's always cuppers..

Any other factors which distinguish Merton from the rest?

I really liked it when I went down for interview. Seemed quite small and homely, and provide full catered accomodation for all 3/4 years. Food was pretty good (lunch better than dinner actually!) and the free pool tables were good.
Shame about the lack of offer :-s.
