Insomnia :(

Hey all,

I am a great sleeper and have always had a good routine. I sleep like a log and always aim for 8-10 hours on weekdays (when I'm at College).

However in the past week I am having the worst time ever with trying to get to sleep. I don't know if it's because it's just been the holidays and I haven't been in any routine - going to bed at midnight, getting up mid-day and not my usual routine of - going to bed around 10.30, getting up at 7.00. Maybe my body is out of it's usual pattern and I just need to force myself back into the routine?

It is cracking me up. I go to bed at 10.30ish and I lay there willing myself to sleep, but my brain will not 'shut off'. I start thinking of random things, like how I will wear my hair the next day, what gig's I am going to and for hours this is how it goes on. I don't drop off until anytime between 1 - 2 am.- which obviously can't go on, because I have to be up at 7 for college and I'm like a Zombie through the day. I try and stop myself thinking and just think, "sleep, sleep, sleep.." But, my mind still wonders off somewhere and I can't relax/concentrate on sleeping. If I wake up through the night for the toilet etc., when I climb back into bed - it is still the same - I cannot sleep and my mind won't SHUT UP! Even though I am knackered.

Could it be anything to do with the fact I'm on my period? Even though it has never disturbed my sleeping pattern in the past, maybe it could be a one off? I am pretty much at the end of it now though...so

I don't know what to do - I'm so miserable. I can't function without sleep. Has anybody got ANY advice or tips to help me out. I'm at my wits end.

Thanks a lot.

i dunno why ure having sleeping problems, maybe you should see your gp?
to help you sleep, i used to try counting...normally u should be sleeping by 3 minutes of counting cos it's so boring and try not to move...lol it sounds really stupid saying it out loud, but that's what i do.
make sure ur warm and have a warm drink and bath before bed...
hope it helps.

I'm having insomnia problems too, except I don't get to sleep until about 5 or 6. I've been an absolute zombie and have tried everything- teas, counting, warm drinks, boring books, overheated rooms, my mum's sleeping pills... I have decided to just force myself to stay up until I pass out from exhaustion. I'm hoping this will happen at around 10/11 tonight and then I'll see how tomorrow night fares. I think it's because my boyfriend is away and I'm just not used to sleeping without him.
Hey, seems there are a fair few of us who cant sleep these days. I haven't slept properly for about a week and its killing me. There have been two totally sleepless nights and otherwise I get to sleep at about 4am, which means no getting up until 3pm or something. Then the sun goes down at 4.30 so its like living in Iceland. Everyone else gets to sleep at normal times so you just end up lonely and depressed. Worst is I have mocks next week with my first exam at 9am on monday so I am BONED. Friends recommend taking 'Calms' (some herbal pill for stress) or drinking whiskey before bed. I'm not up for either of those really but things are getting desperate :frown: Good to know i'm not alone anyhow.
Hey

Believe me, I know where you're coming from. If you've previously had a good sleeping pattern, the best thing I can advise you to do is to set your alarm for 7am (if that's your usual getting up time) and then actually GET UP at 7 when it goes off, no matter what time you've got to sleep. Sure, you may well feel like cr*p for the day, but I bet you'll be sleepy at 10-11. Make sure you just get up at the same time every day and you'll fall back into a decent pattern. Just force yourself to get up and do something active during the day so you're tired .

Good luck to all of you that can't sleep
Pssht. Thats nothing. On a normal college weekday, I cant get to sleep until half 1 or 2am. I have to be up about 6:45 so thats about 5/6 hours sleep a night. I'm used to it now though because Its been like that since the Summer Hols. I always make up for it during Half Term and ish.

Lol, you said "that's nothing" then proceeded to describe the same pattern as me

That's good advice - it's what I'm gonna try do. Gonna go to bed at 10.30pm then tomorrow morning I'm going to get up early - even though it's a Saturday. I'll get up when my boyfriend goes to work. Then I'm going to go into town, tire myself out and get an early night tomorrow night and so on. And by Monday I'm going be back into my normal routine, *wishful thinking*.

Thanks to you all xxx

For me a nice long bath always works. I think the trick is just to relax, make sure your comfortable and i'm sure you'll be fine.
Also I work nightshifts at the weekend, and dayshifts on 3 days of the week now that is fecked up
I'm having the EXACT same prob. it's really killing me  :frown:

I've also been having sleeping problems. Until a couple of weeks before Christmas, I'd been sleeping right the way through the night without waking up. As my Oxford interview approached, I began waking up during the night and not being able to get back to sleep again because I was worrying so much.

The night after the interview I slept much better, but as the time came for me to receive the letter I started sleeping badly again. I then found out I got an offer, but despite being really happy, I haven't been able to get into a pattern of sleeping again.

Now, every night without fail I wake up at about 4.30am and take absolutely ages to get back to sleep. It's happened so often now that it's become a routine and I just accept it, while before I was getting really agitated and driving my bf insane!

I have no idea why this is happening or what to do about it, but it's really affecting me because I'm really tired for a lot of the time. Anyone else experienced this/got any tips?

If I'm evenly remotely worried/agitated about something, I don't sleep well, which for me is most of the time! I toss and turn til about 4/5am and feel shattered in the morning.

Is anything going on that's bothering you right now, maybe emotionally, maybe that you hadn't really even thought about? If there is, try to find someone to talk at for an hour or so, and you'll feel much lighter in the head afterwards. I did this the other day and actually got a fairly decent night's sleep that evening. Just a thought
exactly the same.
honestly, these past 3 days: i don't think i have actually slept.
i mean, maybe i have for a few minutes every half hour or so, but nothing more than that.

Listen to Faithless - Insomnia (I can't get no sleep) no pun intended. Actually works a treat for me

I think you have lost your routine like you suggested, so try doing something relaxing before you go to bed and maybe read a book or magazine,
plus remember not to drink any caffeine aswell

INSOMNIA!
can't sleep because of you..
INSOMNIA!
you don't know what you're, putting us through..

*i was in a band called insomnia.. someone wrote a song about us ^^ hehe*

i'd just get yourself as warm and cozy as possible, have a hot drink before sleepie time, and get to bed a bit earlier than 10.30.

always takes everyone a while to get back into their routines after christmas.
