is this something to do with glasses? if so then glasses are a bit rubbish really! theyr not fixing the problem theyr making it worse

i dont want my eyesight to get worse and worse :frown:

help

It may just be that as they are growing older, their eyesight is deteriorating. Probably nothing to do with the glasses... I'm sure things would be a lot worse if the didn't wear them (tripping over, walking into brick walls etc)

My eyes are getting worse, but I don't think that's necessarily to do with the glasses. I really couldn't see a thing if I weren't to wear contact lenses.
Reply 4
ive not really found that happen to me but i don't wear them all the time. when you wear them all the time, you may become tolerant and then need a stronger perscription.
Reply 5
Only if you wear the wrong prescription.

Glasses are better for you than contact lenses.

Unfortunately, short sightedness (and I suppose long too, I don't know much about it though) only gets worse as you get older. Luckily mine has slowed right down, but it will always get worse.

I was told that I was long-sighted 3 years ago and had a pair of specs until last summer when I was told that my eyes had healed and I didn't need them anymore. So no I don't think glasses are bad for you
I've worn glasses since was 10, and my eyesight got a tiny bit worse every year until I hit 17, and since then, my prescription hasn't changed, so I don't think that glasses are bad for you. As dogtanian said, they're only bad for you if you wear the wrong prescription lenses. Plus, your friends' eyes getting worse isn't unusual - it happens to loads of people and isn't due to the fact that their wearing glasses.

Yeah, glasses are better than contact lenses. I wore nothing but contacts for 3 years and went from slightly short sighted to being unable to function without contacts/glasses. It's definately slowed down now I wear glasses a lot, but have still ended up close to clinically blind, apparantly, in 5 years.

I had pretty perfect eyesight until about a year ago then it just went horribly downhill. :frown:

Don't they have those pressure things now though? I don't know - little bags of sand that you put on your eyes whilst you sleep and they slowly reshape your eyeball. Apparently this will give you perfect sight for about 24hours. Don't know if they're doing that in England yet though.

Haven't heard of that, doesn't sound as effective as laser surgery though. Will be getting that soon as I can afford it (prioritised slightly above the boob job :p: )

Interesting.. I started wearing glasses when I was really young and I'd wear them all the time. My prescription crept up more or less every year, but now I only put them on when I need them - I take them off once I get home (as long as I'm not watching telly) and don't have them on when I go out for a walk, even when I go out socially. My prescription hasn't changed since I started doing this.

You can't become 'tolerant' to glasses! If you are short- or long-sighted then it is a GOOD thing to correct your vision. Not wearing glasses when you should can give you really bad headaches and cause bad habits like screwing your eyes up to read things far away, thus giving you eye strain. Usually people's vision gets worse until the late teens and early twenties if its already deteriorating, and then stabilises.

I think eyesight gets worse on it's own but obviously if your glasses are too weak and you're squinting then it'll get worse quicker....

Definitely not. Wearing spectacles is much better than not wearing them if have myopia/presbyopia/hypermetropia. During adolescence as you grow your eyesight will get worse if you have one of these conditions - its natural. That's why if you do consider corrective laser treatment you should always wait until about 25~26 when your prescription hasn't changed for a few years.
well i have a friend who has done optometry at university, and is now doing her pre-reg year.

she told me that opticians, on purpose, make the glasses ever-so-slightly stronger (than they should be), in order to "guarantee" that you do come back next year (so that their business does well too) because if your glasses are stronger than they should be, your eyes will adjust to that strength, and will therefore get weaker and weaker (meaning you will need stronger and stronger glasses each time)

thats not against the law or anything btw.

meh, i'm just gonna have laser eye treatment (Soon hopefully)

If you break the glass then use the sharp edges to slit your wrists then they are definitely bad for you. As for the other use, no they aren't.

^^^this is really interesting! are there any other methods to improve eyesight naturally do u think? do u think they sell those bags on ebay?

thanks 4 all the comments guys xxxxx

I've no idea, it was in the news a few months ago - apparently that's what they did thousands of years ago to 'fix' their eyesight.

My optician told me that as you grow your eyesight only gets worse. My mum's got really bad when she was a teenager but hasn't changed since she stopped growing (which was obviously quite some time ago!)
