neck pain

ok, this is going to sound stupid as anything, but everytime I have an exam I always get a really sore neck from looking down at the paper.

I had a 2hour mock yesterday and now I'm in quite a lot of pain. :frown:

Basically how can I stop it?

I've tried looking up at the clock periodically during exams but it hasn't helped. I really can't afford to take a 5 minute break and stare at the ceiling during an exam either. And ideas?

Haha, i used to get it back in the year 10 GCSE mocks! But I went crazy about weights since then and obviously, the neck being a muscle, strengthed it a whole lot.

Basically, just do some neck exercises to build it up. Then it won't ache, you just have a weak neck is all.

ok...thanks

'neck exercises'?

Might be a bit confusing, ask me if yo u need help. You will need some light weights for them which I'm guessing you don't have since you're a girl? Call me sexist but I bet I'm right!

lean on your hand

Bad posture is the problem. When doing long exams, your back should be straight and 90° angle to your thights. In other words, normal sitting position.

Leaning forward and down for too long will cause strain on your neck because it will be supporting the whole weight of your head.

right.

But you still have to look down to do the paper if your back is straight, you have to look down more so wouldn't that make it worse?

I always get really bad neck pain but it becomes so much worse during exams and the run up to them. I found in the summer that spending all day in the library revising lead to terrible pain that evening. I just used a heat thing that goes in the microwave to ease the pain.

I get neck pain allllllll the time, from bad posture, and it is always worse when i'm working a lot. I use a cherry stone pillow which you put in the microwave, and have lots of neurofen. Also I massage my neck and try and stretch it out kinda..by pulling my head kinda forward then up and back into alignment. Sort of works..

long time ago but anyone with this problem...

you can make ur muscles stronger by simply stretching them. stand with your legs a little apart and totally relax your body till your shoulders droop. drop your head forwards and down until you can feel the stretch over the back of your neck and down your spine (you should also feel your shoulders being 'pulled back').

if you do this randomly throughout the day every day your neck and back muscles become stronger in a matter of weeks...plus its easy and not particularly time consuming.
