Geography Degree without geography A level

Hey
I think i made a big mistake in not taking geography to A level. I took it for GCSE and it was my favourite subject with French but my timetable clashed this year and i chose french instead!
However, now I really feel that i could pursue a geography degree

i was wondering whether anybody has applied or is planning to apply to university to study geography with either no geography A level or an AS level in geography??

What universities?

I'm hoping to take an AS level in geography next year! Any replies much appreciated!

Four I know off the top of my head:

Durham - does not require geography
Sheffield - requires geography or a relevant subject
UCL - "Applicants are normally expected to have taken Geography A level, but this is not essential and highly motivated students who have taken AS level Geography are also encouraged to apply"
Cambridge
I can't imagine anyone getting into cambridge or Durham without geography A-level.. surely?

the best thing would be to contact the respective universities and ask whether you would be considered without it. although these places claim they dont require it specifically, considering the nature of a geography degree it is possible many will operate the same policy.
Leicester don't require it AFAIK.

If you don't end up taking it, make yourself as familiar as possible with current affairs, maybe subscribe to Geography Review. It's the concepts of geography that are important (in my opinion) such as sustainability, globalisation, urban issues, rural issues...
Good luck with the AS course!

You don't need geography A-level for a large amount of universities, Cambridge, Oxford, Durham, Leicester, Plymouth, LSE, Sheffield, Sussex just to name a few. Even at Nottingham where it is a required subject they said at the open day that people will still be considered without it.

So apply for geography if you want, you don't need the A-level, only at some universities (and even then they may be flexible)

Oh, and by the way, subjects like biology/physics and sociology/economics will prepare you for the physical and human side of geography (respectively) anyway.

You may find it hard to find someone on this forum who has, but I can assure you there will have been people who have got in with out it.

I don't have a Geography A Level (or any A Levels) and I got accepted for Geography at both Bristol UWE and Bath Spa.
I decided to do Geographic Information Systems @ Bath Spa in the end tho.

To be honest, if you explain your interest in Geo in your personal statement you might get lucky.
You won't be disadvantaged really as you'd start with the basics in the 1st year to ensure everyone is at the same level when you start the 2nd year.

Bit off topic but how long did it take you to get an offer from bath spa? I sent my app off back in october to do geography/education and haven't heard anything =[
Also, did you get a welcome letter or anything saying they'd received you app?

I can't remember exactly when I got mine, but I think it was definitely after February so I wouldn't worry just yet.
Also, my gf who also applied to Bath Spa didn't hear back until literally the last few days before you're automatically rejected.

And no, I don't think I got anything acknowledging my application.

Thanks, not so worried now
You shouldn't need A-level for university-level geography, but I imagine you'll find the course a lot more challenging without it. That's a Cambridge-based observation anyway.
