Company Law

As many members know I was unwell last year. Last year I did begin my course in Company law and I found it considerably boring and about ten minutes into the lesson my mind was in other places, especially the part about corporate finance. Equity & Trusts is one of my favourite subjects, but company law failed to inspire me in our brief encounter.

Is this an interesting subject, once one gets into it? Also the marks for company law are always the lowest.

I am not sure whether to try and change it for criminal evidence 2 to give my year some continuity.

Company law can be a difficult subject to study academically - by its very nature it is less driven by legal principal than other areas you may be interested in (equity for example). Instead, you may find it more procedural in nature. It is more of a practical topic, dealing as it does with the quite specific way in which companies go about their business. It comes alive when you consider it in the context of "real life" takeovers and corporate disputes. That may not be of much comfort when you're considering what options to take. Consider where you see your career going - if your practise may include an element of corporate work then stick with it, if not - bin it.

I studied company law last year and I would definitely say that you should give it a bit more of a go - you really can't judge the subject on only a brief encounter. Once I got into it I really enjoyed the course and I found it mixed really well with Equity because of directors fiduciary duties. Obviously, the course will depend on which Uni you are at - my course did not have that much procedure (which for me was good as the procedure is not as interesting - as I'm now finding on the LPC!).

In contrast, I also studied Criminal Procedure and Evidence in my second year and although it was interesting, it will have absolutely no use for you in the future (unless you are going into Criminal Law) whereas Company law gives you a bit more commercial awareness and is very helpful for the LPC (when, or if you come to it) whichever route you take.

I hope this helps

RUN LAURA RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Company is the WORST module I have EVER studied and I struggled like Iv never struggled before!!! The three weeks I spent working on my assignment was absolute torture.
Some of my friends like it - but if you didnt like it instantly, you wont. I would seriously consider dropping out if I have to retake my assignment when the marks come back

I quite enjoyed evidence though, I'd do that - think I might take evidence 2 next semester as well.

I might be the lucky first because every year only one person gets one, or sometimes none. At Hull people choose it because you can write all over your statute book and take some notes into the exam.

um  Evidence 2 is good because it is a 50% coursework problem q and he seems to set nice ones. Comparative law is out because it collides with conflicts. Restorative Justice is with a professor who nobody can hear, other than when he harks 'the sitigmatic concept of punishment'

Choice, choices.

I think evidence will be full, but it does not fit in better with my time table.

would the fact that company is at 6.15pm deter any one when evidence is at 10.15am

I love Company - mainly because the way that its taught at my uni makes it a heck of a lot easier to understand. Some of it is hard, thats true, but after a seminar I understand it a lot better and generally I really find it great to study.

I HATED Equity and Trusts with a passion, only just managed to pass it

Yes it would deter me

Thats awful isn't it??!! I picked company because it fitted in with my timetable and Im almost definately going to pay the price when the results come through in Feb. :frown:

Do what you genuinely think you will do best in.
But the point made about business law being so central to the LPC is an excellent point  I definately wont be doing company 2 next semester but hopefully I will have gained something out of my epic struggle through company 1!!

I am doing evidence 2. Fresh start.

I still know a lot of a company. I think it is easier to make a transition from evidence one. The method of assessment is far easier. You may as well play the game
