everyone else smokes

Everyone in my family smokes and everyone who comes to our house smokes too. When we are outside I try to stand out of the way of the smoke but in the house it chokes me. I try to open a window whenever anyone lights up but I'm always made to feel bad about it. They don't care that it might be damaging their and my health, or that it makes the house stink, or that when I go in to lectures I stink. I've tried to talk to them about it but nothing gets through to them. Is anyone else in the same position?

I thought about saying something like 'If you can't beat 'em, then join 'em', but realised that's not very helpful. I agree that you should just go to your room if someone's smoking and do something. You say you stink when you go to lectures, why? I'm a smoker and I smell lovely - maybe you should shower in the mornings and use something like Febreze to get the smell of smoke out of your clothes?

Eat eggs one night, then the next day whenever anyone lights up, go next to them and fart really hard, try not to crap yourself though... when they complain about the smell say "Now you know how i feel, and mine doesn't even damage your health!"

It may work...

I do shower every morning but the whole house stinks of stale smoke and it gets in my clothes. I can SEE the smoke in the air wafting about. If I just went to my room every time someone was smoking I would never come out.

Is it worth staying in areas of the house where there is smoke, if its damaging your health  ?

If you're a uni student then no doubt you won't be living there much longer, your family should be considerate but if they're not don't let them damage your health!

Yeah, my mother smokes as well, doesnt seem to care, and i have asthma as well, a few months ago i had an asthma attack and was in hospital for a few days, i got back home and my mum carried on smoking regardless.

I know its a long shot but maybe you could try and explain to your family that you don't want to risk your health and attempt a compromise - maybe they smoke in the kitchen and garden, and leave the lounge smoke free or something.

It may not be your house, as someone above said, but your parents shouldn't be compromising your health even if they're willing do risk their own.
