Middlesex University-any good?

Ok so I've gotten an offer to study at Middlesex for a four year sandwich business studies degree and I'd like to hear from someone who's studied there or who knows a bit about the Uni.

It was rated pretty low in the last edition of the Guardian league tables, but it was in the top 20 of UK universities in the 2004 edition.

How is the teaching? I noticed that the 2003 institutional audit by the Quality Assurance Agency gave Middlesex the highest rating possible.

How is the student life?

How is the Hendon campus?(that's where I'll be studying)

How are the chances of getting work after completion?

Hope some of you can help me out. I'm an international student so I don't know much about UK uni's.

Hmmm... its generally not that respected although I dont know about your particluar subject.. And no way is it a top 20 UK uni where did u get those stats? I would have thought more bottom 20.

Yes and I'm from around there and theres not much to do at all. Its in the London suburbs so not too exciting.

It is no where near the top 20, in any rankings. And dont trust the guardian rankings anyway. My advice would be, dont go there.

Not a great university, I don't think the job prospects afterwards would be good. Also, the Guardian league tables are a bit dodgy as they include a factor called 'inclusiveness' for some reason, which messes them up a bit. For example, SOAS comes in at no.6 but it definitely isn't THAT good. SOAS is great for the things it specialises in but it doesn't deserve to be ranked that highly.

I find the Times to be a bit more objective but still League tables aren't a great indication of who is good and who isn't. Though the subject tables are good, maybe look at the business ones, though they only rank up to no.20 i think.

But if the teaching is good, how can it be a bad university?

The teaching is good according to whom?

Teaching ratings are also not very reliable, ask PQ she will explain the problems with it. The research score is good for sussing out how good a department is, often research funding means that under graduate students have access to really expensive stuff. We had access to labs designed for PhD students for example as it was a 5* department.

The Times has a good link which tells you how much graduates are likely to earn from each university, use that along with employment stastics it may give you a better idea than some random league table.

The Quality Assurance Agency. I think it's a UK government organisation.

One of my best friends goes there and she absolutely loves it.

Its just not that respected as a university. I dont know how to explain this....

Ignore all this snobbery lark, if it has good facilities, good employment prospects etc then go for it. Happiness is more important than the need to go to a 'traditional' university.

Yeah but its not snobbery! Middlesex uni has been on my doorstep my whole life and generally the people that go there are either mature students wanting qualifications or normal students who dont really have any a levels...

It does depend what kind of job you want to go into and what your grades are like anyway.

Exactly without knowing any facts it is impossible to say. For a vast majority of subjects there probably is better universities but I am sure even Middlesex has some gems.

I used to go to St Mary's CE Secondary School right up the hill from the Hendon campus, they've recently undergone an amazing reconstruction. Though the new building looks nice, it's essentially (like the rest of the university) a big cornershop; FULL of mature foreign students.
