thanks, i hope so, im just dreading if i get 10 nasty girls in my hall

I assure you, the chances of you ending up with "10 nasty girls" are very slim - most people on freshers week want to make a good impression, so why would they be horrible to you? University is a time to loose your misconceptions and meet a whole variety of different people; relax, you'll love it.

EDIT - plus, if you don't end up getting along with the girls you're with, they'll be plenty of other people to meet that you'll click with better - through your course, societies etc. And you'll be moving out of there in less than a year anyway!

I went through so much to find that course! cos i loved all my subjects at college, strange i no but i was at a good college. You can go with me!! i wont b going to the crazy events either. i gave the fb page a go , thought about swapping for henderson hall, but how far away is that? have u got facebook, you can add me if you like.

Haha! Well at least you got what you wanted. I didn't even do Psychology in college, to tell the truth. But somehow I got in anyway.

Oh! Sure thing. Have you bought the wristband yet? I haven't.

And oh lord no, don't take Henderson! That's miles away from campus. D: And a 20 minute bus ride. The rooms there are really pretty but honestly I don't think it's worth the stress. Lots of people look to be trying to escape there. Why not try St Mary's too? If you're self catered in Leazes you might be able to find some people willing to swap. I've already found two, myself.
But if all else fails, just hang in there. There'll be a chance to change rooms in November, I've heard. Some people drop out by then, leaving lovely empty rooms for the grabbing.

Yeap, I'm on facebook. [email protected] What's yours?

im staying in castle leazes- my last choice lol, i heard its wild in there, and im the quiet sort!

I spent a few nights at Castle Leazes and it was never really noisy when I was there. Freshers will probably be loud but other than that you will get your own private space and stuff. Leazes have decent rooms too. DOn't worry, you'll love it.

During freshers week did you just tend to go out with your flatmates?

Kind of ****ting it since I've heard nothing about accommodation now so I assume I'm not getting it. (local student)

I'm a local student, I lived in Ricky Road but not until after a week, after Freshers. They do a local thing the weekend before freshers. I met people from here actually and then we met more local people. It was really fun, and we pretty much hung out with each other all through freshers. I still go out with some of them now. Try and do that if you can, it makes freshers a lot easier but then again you also meet loads of people on your course and stuff.

hi everyone ill be moving into uni sometime next week!
im also a tad bit worried about freshers week aswell... i'll be staying with a whole flat of boys (im a girl) and i dont really like partying/clubbing at all- however i do like to go out with friends for a nice meal or something so im not a total social recluse lol. im worried that the lads may want to go out clubbing on the first day and i wont want to- would it be impolite to refuse their invitation?- that's if they invite me lol. or would it just be a bit awkward as it is freshers week and the whole flat would be out... cannot wait till second year :/

Hey, sorry this is so late but what do you think of Newcastle? I'm a quiet person too and am slightly worried about the whole clubbing scene...

I hated Freshers week, although I don't think it helped that I was feeling really sick before I even arrived and that lasted most of the week which alcohol definitely didn't help. I wasn't really that impressed with the clubs they took us to which mostly play the same **** they do everywhere else in the country, and I was too hungover and ill to do most of the day time activities (although I did summon up the energy to go paint balling which was decent). Avoid Tiger Tiger AT ALL COSTS, worst piece of **** club I've ever been to

But it gets much better. A lot of the socialising in Freshers week feels really forced- its later on that you meet your real friends. Later on you also explore town more and come across the more interesting and generally better clubs and pubs. and if you aren't a big clubber, don't worry there is still plenty of other things to do.

On the issue of accommodation, Marris House is definitely the best one. Its right next to Ricky Road so you get the social aspect, but its much nicer with two toilets and two showers between 6 people (as opposed to one in Ricky Road) and of course a television and generally much nicer kitchen/living room area. Each room also gets a wash basin which is really handy. There is also a really nice community vibe at Marris House. Pretty much everyone I know from other accommodations has said they wish they lived in Marris. And to top it all off, its not even that much more expensive then Ricky Road and its much less expensive them some of the other accommodations.

Loving the honesty of this. Also loving the fact that I Marris House is my first choice for accomodation, and because I have an unconditional offer, I have a decent chance of going there!

When it comes to freshers week - what would be your reccommendation to a fresher in terms of what to do/where to go?

Hmm, well if you are getting a wrist band its probably just worth following the crowd on the nights. You will end up in some **** places, but its the done thing and you don't want to be sitting around by yourself in a mostly empty halls. My best advice would be to try and save some energy for the day time activities- one of my main regrets from the week was not making the most of those. That's where you will get your £50's worth. This year there was Paintballing, Quadbiking, adventure assault courses, a tour of St.James Park (worth it even if you aren't a footy fan), cocktail making and plenty more besides and I'm sure it will be just as good for your arrival. Avoid the temptation to sleep in and just get out there and do it.

If you are interested I can recommend some places and club nights that are worth checking out after Freshers week is over. You'll quickly learn about the main places by yourself (unless there is a specific night on, they will play the usual generic crappy town music you probably get at home), but there are one or two hidden gems that you need to try out at least once.

As for Marris, great choice. If you've got an unconditional chances are you will get it, and you certainly won't regret it!

Ah you're so lucky! Part of my uni choice is for the nightlife obviously the course as well. No don;t worry about it everyone's going to be nervous and in the exact situation and people will probably be drunk most of the time so it's bound to be awkward.

hey. i was wondering about something that mayve you can help me with.. i'm going to be underage during freshers' week (i'll turn 18 2 months later), do you think i won't be able to enjoy freshers' week, like partying and that kind of stuff? are they very strict with ID's? I also heard that underage people get a wristband with a different colour? is it true, and is it easy to get a "normal" coloured one or just find a solution so I don't miss out all the fun?

thanks in advance

Definatly not, one or two places have their occasional nights where they will ID every living soul (Sinners, Tup Tup are recent offenders) but for the most part, you will never get ID'd, if the worst comes to the worst, the student ID is accepted as a form of ID by most places and it lacks a date of birth

The nights that the union put on were god awful and early, you could never get served and the nights aren't great, everyone usually goes off to town at 10/11 anyway after the union but yes the wristbands are a different colour. You can always ring people to find out when people are going to town and join on. Last year mind Digital put out a wristband that was exactly the same colour as the Ricky Road band that people used to get in.

Freshers week is probably the night that is least like Newcastle, the fun probably starts as you get to truly know people and find your friends.

Accomodation wise, Ricky Road is the one for party halls, Marris House had a rep for being slightly unsocial and Leazes for being crap for pre drinking. You won't need an En Suite, they are pointless and expensive and in all my time in Ricky, there has never been a fight for the showers. Couldn't help you much nights wise unless you're into Deep House/Techno/D&B/Jungle

Thank you very much for the help!

So do you think I'll probably won't have problems in clubs in the town (as they dont ID often) just in the union?

and sorry about the stupid question (i dont know much about freshers' week) but the different coloured wristband will only have effect in the union not in clubs, right?

No problems in town really unless they have a crackdown on student ID and I can't see that happening. The wristband was only used for entry into one club bar the union and it was specific to hall groups (red or blue meant different nights whereas the green one was the u18) but on every other night we left the union pretty fast to go to random nights in town who had nothing to do with it.

People who didn't buy bands were able to sneak in by finding club bands as freebies or one person coloured in a white wristband.

I wouldn't worry too much about freshers week or what they bang on about how good it is in the union prospectus. There are miles better nights to come and everyone finds their friends later on. Plus the off licences near student halls don't ID!

My experience has been a bit different. I have always had ID in the form of a driving license so I have been alright. But I have friends who have had their student ID's rejected at multiple places, and the one time I forgot my license I had my student ID rejected (can't remember where at though)

As for the wristband, my friend was without one and was able to sneak into some of the freshers venues dotted about town (but that was only because he had a festival wristband which he used), but was rejected from several others. We didn't even bother with the Union on Freshers though, the Union nights are crap from my experience. All in all Freshers Week was a disappointment.

thanks for both answers!

so, what do you think I should do? get a wristband (even if i can't manage to get the >18 one) and show my student ID in clubs, hoping they will accept it and let me in?

i'm kind of worried not only about freshers week but also about the couple of months i will be underage (i'll only turn 18 in november), so i'm worried i'm not going to be able to make as many friends because i won't be able to go clubbing, as everyone else.

My honest opinion of the freshers band is that it was only good for the nights, hardly anyone did the activities as everyone was a bit too hungover. But try your student id out and if you are extra cheeky, try your drivers licence. I guarantee you will still get in places if it's anything like last year

But there's nothing stopping you from pre drinking with all your uni lot! You will make friends in no time if you want to, and they'll probably drag you out and find somewhere you can get in  believe me you make more friends attempting to get out of the flat than you do once you are out! Last year 17 year olds were getting in everywhere across newcastle so don't worry! Newcastle is incredibly lenient when it comes to girls and ID. You'll still make heaps of friends either way
