The closest store is not close very close at all. The best place to do your shopping (cost and value - wish) is ASDA; this is situated in the town centre about 1 mile from the de-havilland campus.
It is best you do most of your shopping in one go; .i.e. probably once a month, you book a cab and get your friends together and do a bulk shopping to save you the trouble of going there all the time.
There are local buses going to the town centre which stop close to de-havilland as well; they might be a good option as the buses usually followed their time-tabled schedule.
The galleria shopping centre is VERY close to de-havilland, it's like a big shopping mall; you can do all your clothes shopping, Books, Cds and other luxury items.
However, in case of emergency, there IS a convinience store ON campus at de-havilland where you get buy milk toothpaste and some groceries, I would't advice you to use this shop though because they are VERY overpriced and the Student union advices students against buying groceries from them and hopefully this will force them to drive prices down ..

So, the summary of the rant is - Go to ASDA as it is cheap and you get good value for money on SOME products..
Another option you might want to consider is online shopping with TESCO, they are better than ASDA (in my opinion) and you can get them to deliver to you on campus ... (I think there is also ocado.com)

Hope this helps

I do my shopping about once a month when my parents come to visit  (works out cheaper for me, leaving me with more money to put in the till of the Font

I try and avoid food shopping if I can, I only go to Asda if I really, really need something.

Anyhoo, I agree with dimexi, Asda is a great place to get life's little necessities

Thanks all for the replies! and Dimexi, you are always such great help. I deem you TSR's Hertfordshire Guru  . Another question...how far away is de havilland campus from the main train station to London?
Reply 10
Its about 2 quid on the bus, over half an hours walk from what I remember.
I had to get a cab to the station because

A) Im lazy
B) I have far too much stuff to take home
C) I couldnt find the train station

you are very welcome .. The station is about 2 miles away (estimate) from dehavilland.. as someone has already said, it is a good 45 min walk or so... but you can always get a cab (about 4 pounds off peak time 7 quid peak time) or 2 pounds on the bus...

Hey guys, I'll be at Herts next semester and would like advice on where to go for my grocery shopping and basic necessities (i.e soap, toothpaste). I'll be living at de havilland, so any stores closest to the halls here are fine. Directions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

also, if you want abit more choice for clothes cd's, toiletries etc(and to get out of hatfield!) you could go to st albans - they have a wilkinsons there - so v. cheap! St Labans is about 30mins on the bus-ish........i wouldn't suggest goingt there for every little thing, asda is probably your best bet for that but you can get alot in st albans if you fancy a change of scenery

oh, and welwyn is about 30 mins in the opposite direction too (but I hate it!)
