Edexcel Gcse Mathes Coursework

 I am experiencing difficulties with the EDEXCEL GCSE Maths Shapes Coursework.

'A farmer has exactly 1000 metres of fencing and wants to fence off a plot of level land'.

He is not concerned about the shape of the plot, but it must have a perimeter of 1000m. So it could be:

A rectangle 400m x 100m, A rectangle 450m x 50m, etc

or anything else with a perimeter or circumference of 1000m

She wishes to fence off the plot of land, which contains the maximum area.

Investigate the shape, or shapes, that could be used to fence in the maximum area using exactly 1000 metres of fencing each time.'

I am really stuck on this. I know that you are supposed to work out formulas for each type of shape, and then the largest perimeter that each shape can have, and then finally the largest perimeter. I know that the largest quaderilateral is 250 metres by 250 metres, and that the formulae for quaderilaterals is:

500 - W (WIDTH) = LENGTH

W X L = AREA

Additionally, I know that the largest shape is a circle.

However, aside from this I am completely bamboozled

Anybody doing or done this cwk on edexcel?

So you've found the rectangle with the largest area, whats its special property? Now maybe try looking at shapes with more sides, going up one at a time, and each time see which shape gives the greatest area, you should see a pattern emerging...
